In the age
of high tech deer hunting we find many avenues to help a hunter
attract deer. This is an attemp to help people to locate deer on a
low budget.
Deer do the same thing every day. So, you will need
to take time to observe what they are doing and patern them. After
you have a little idea of the paterns of the herd you will hunt it
is time to scout.
1. Locate the section of woods you are going
to hunt. It is sometimes easier to do this in the winter when
snow is on the ground and tracks are easy to see. 2. Look for
hunting areas between bedding and food/water. Deer do not move
around much they will stay in a 1 to 3 mile radious of the bedding
area. They feel safe in this area and do not go far from it. Only
in the rut will a deer (usually a buck) move more than just a few
miles away fro the bedding area. 3. Look for other sign. In ealy
fall you will begin to see rubs. (small trees that a buck has
rubbed his antlerson to mark his territory)In just a few short
weeks you will begint to see scrapes. (patches of ground that a
buck can paw away the dirt and leaves to attract a doe) If you have
a buck in this area he WILL be active in these activities. This is
a clear sign of the pater of a buck. He is trying to attact a doe
for breeding season and he will check his rub and scrape line
almost daily. 4.Find a tree you can hand your stand in, you will
want to make sure you will be able to take clear shots with not
trees or tree limbs in the way of your shot. This tree should be
in the intersection of deer trails. (paths that deer walk in) If
you have more than one trail intersecing your stand you will have
to watch in many directions. You will never know what direction
they will come from. 5. Enjoy the hunt.
If you spend your time
wisely in your scouting and planning your hunt. It will be more
successful.
