Defense Arts Academy
They have been instructing men, women, and children in the Spokane area since 1984, offering classes in Taekwondo, Hapkido, and Judo. Over the years they have developed a special children's program for ages 4-6. There unique adult program is a highly refined, innovative, defense system, that is fun to learn as well as, an excellent fitness activity. The study of Defense Arts is more than a self-defense system; students learn to conquer fear, develop personal power, and improve their quality of life.

The exercises develop strength and flexibility of the body. Poomse (forms) develop patience, concentration, and attention to detail. Sparring develops quick reflexes, spirit, and humility. Meditation develops inner awareness and confidence. In the end, however, only by balancing all of these can one reach beyond the black belt to the true virtue of martial arts. It is a great accomplishment to reach black belt rank and an even greater accomplishment to reach beyond to the mature understanding of the self and of Defense Arts (martial arts).

Philosophy

The study of martial arts at Defense Arts focuses on the development of character and values based on a responsibility to society to only train those people who posses the qualities that a martial artist should possess.

The early development of martial arts in China dates back to 551 B.C., when Confucianism had a great deal of influence. Confucius believed that by practicing the five ideals of, moral behavior would become second nature. This was called deliberate tradition. Through an intense educational program, which involved all aspects of life and took place over many years, the goal was achieved and the traditions became "Habits of the Heart."

For those 4 - 6 years old, the mighty mite program is like a "pre-school" class for martial arts students. Mighty mites are taught the same techniques as the older students but with an emphasis on developing motor skills, coordination, and positive character traits.

Children's program

For those 7 - 12 years old, the children's program is geared towards the development of discipline and self-esteem. Advanced children's classes emphasize the development of leadership qualities and skills.

Adult program

The adult program for those over thirteen is designed for the mature adult. Joint locks and pressure points are emphasized in this class to provide a well rounded self-defense program that relieves stress, builds confidence, and improves physical fitness.

Levels of Force

Washington state law states that self-defense is the use of reasonable force. In the United States, military police are taught that there are 5 levels of force that should be used to de-escalate confrontation. In civil cases these levels of force have been used to determine whether or not a person used reasonable force. In a dangerous situation one must always use the level of force appropriate for the situation.

2. Physical Force - One should try to over power the person physically if possible.
