Stephanie Huh, 2005
Jeeyoon Huh (허지윤), better known as
Stephanie Huh, was born on
January 13,
1986 and is an
American student and
entertainer whose career took off in the early
2000s. Her legendary exploits have garnered a loyal following, and
took on an international dimension when she spent a year on a tour
across
Korea and the
United
Kingdom beginning in 2005. She has since returned to the
United
States in 2006 and currently maintains residences in both
Chicago and
Buffalo. In 2005, Huh
made
People magazine's list of the
50 Most Beautiful People.
[1173] Huh also serves as
spokesperson for
Tampax Pearl tampons and
travels with the Pearl Girls, four self-selected dancers who help
promote the product.
Early Life
Born in
South Korea, Huh immigrated
to the
United
States with her parents and younger brother when she was young,
her father Wonsu a
Presbyterian church
elder and her
mother a small shopkeeper, and they settled in the
Buffalo
suburban hamlet of
Getzville in
upstate New York
where she has lived for most of her life.
Later Years
She
matriculated at the
University of Chicago, and it is at an
informational session for the then-incoming Class of 2007 where she
met Jamil Barton-Harris. Huh was quoted in saying that there was an
irresistable chemistry between them that summer, and in August
2003, they flew to
Atlantic City and eloped. It was also that
month when their sex tape, filmed with Barton-Harris' cell phone
camera, was leaked to the public and widely circulated on the
Internet. The marriage was later deemed invalid because Huh was a
minor and they separated shortly afterwards citing irreconciliable
differences, but the two have remained close friends.
In the
summer of 2005, she launched her global tour beginning with an
emotional return to her homeland in
Seoul. There she was introduced to
hip-hop mogul Danny "The Danster"
Park. Park and Huh collaborated to produce several of the #1 hits
in Korea, Japan, and Cambodia that year, including "Where Have All
the Seoul Days Gone?" and the ballad tribute to
R. Kelly "Feelin' on Yo' Booty Once More," making her
one of the small handful to have a successful career in comedy and
music. Unfortunately, the singles' releases in
North America and
Europe experienced
lackluster sales, though the latter became the theme song for the
cancelled
BBC-series "Paedo."
Following her performances in Asia, undaunted, she continued to
Europe, also studying economics at the
London School
of Economics and Political Science. It is at LSE where she met
her current romantic interest Matt Boys, a fellow student, and the
two have been spotted on holiday in posh vacation spots like
Stratford-upon-Avon.
Huh is known for
a comedic style that is marked by utter spontaneity and sheer
ridiculousness, and in live performances, she has acknowledged her
large gay following.
Presently, she shares a flat with her
closest confidantes, Semhar Amdemichael, Beth Dobias, and Maomao
Zhang as well as Kai Wright across the hall on the 5600 block of
South Drexel Avenue, a select location in Chicago's
Hyde Park
neighborhood. The five are currently in collaboration with
MTV to create a
reality
television series tentatively-titled
The Children's
Apartment.
