Delta Anime (Sometimes called
DAnet) is an Internet network that provides a lot of services, including
Internet relay chat,
BitTorrent, and
Web hosting, DAnet also provides services for
Fansubbing groups.
History
Early History
DA.net was founded in early 2004 by a
Canadian man named Francisco Dias, known on IRC as Delta.
Many people who joined the network at this time, especially those that joined before the
eAthena channel joined the network, are now considered to be among the seniority of DA.net.
Although a few of these members were personal friends of Delta's, many came from an emulation community known as
OML, and various spinoff groups, one of which was run by Delta prior to the creation of DeltaAnime.
#Athena advent
It around this time that popular IRC network
EsperNet began shutting down their RO related channels, due to the excessive strain it placed on their servers.
Delta, seizing the opportunity to expand his network, approached the staff of
eAthena with an offer that included a webhosting package in addition to what was considered by the DA.net elite to be "top-notch" support.
Many
RO-related channels soon followed suit, and DA.net grew by a hundredfold in a few short weeks.
#BoxTorrents
Although RO-related channels did help the community grow, Delta considered this to stray from DeltaAnime's original intent, that is, to foster and support the anime fan community.
Around this time, BoxTorrents.com had lost their hosting due to a
DMCA complaint from
ADV.
Delta offered to host BoxTorrents, pro bono, in hopes that it would spread the notion that DeltaAnime was a friend to the anime community.
#deltaanime Today
Although by the summer of 2005 the network would often average more than 3,000 users logged on at time, growth was slow.
Senior member MattDS (an OMLer) proposed that the official chat channel #deltaanime be moved to a less official channel.
The #deltaanime channel was controlled mainly by opers, and a few users felt that this put them in an unfair position of power in the channnel.
Thus #thepub was created in hopes of reforming the power structure in the old #deltaanime channel at the time.
Today, #thepub still exists, which many members whom inhabit it are still there, however, #deltaanime no longer has a feel of 'unfair op power' that it once apparently had.
