The
Department of Ship Technology, Cochin
University has been grooming dynamic Naval Architects for the past
30 years .The department is one of the very few institutions in
India which offers undergraduate course in Naval Architecture and
Ship Building.
The curriculum stipulates two month Industrial
training for the students during the months of May and June every
year in reputed shipyards and related industries.
The
course structure includes various Naval
Architecture subjects such as Stability, Resistance and Propulsion,
Sea Keeping and Manoeuvring, Ship Design, Strength of Ships,
Structural Design of Ships, Ship Building Technology, Marine
Engineering and Ship Propulsion Plants, Electrical Systems on board
Ships and Shipyards, and various other engineering subjects.
The
Department of Ship Technology got on steam in 1975 with an
undergraduate program in Naval Architecture and Ship Building. In
drawing up the curriculum and also for conduct of the above course,
the Department had the active support of experts from the erstwhile
Wilhelm-Pieck University, Rostock, Germany. The
curriculum of the program has been designed as to provide the
students a modern and sound education in basic science and
engineering subjects and acquire profound knowledge in the subjects
of Ship Technology and Naval Architecture, Industrial training
programes in different ship building industries and ports are also
sandwiched into the curriculum. This B.Tech course has also been
accredited by
Royal Institute of Naval
Architecture (RINA) satisfying the UK Engineering Council
requirements for registration of Chartered Engineers and also
included in the Merchant Shipping Rules, Ministry of Transport,
Government of India. Each of our students are members of RINA.
The Department has very well equipped laboratories and
workshops to carry out experiments and practicals in fluid
mechanics, strength of materials, instrumentation, welding,
machining, model making and fitting etc. The Department library has
over 6,000 volumes on Naval Architecture,. Ocean Engineering and
other engineering subjects, in addition to the 30 periodicals being
subscribed to by it. A UNIX based mini computer with 16 terminals
and PCs are available exclusively meant for the students of their
use in advanced computational techniques and other computer
applications.
The
Society of Naval
Architecture Students (SNAS), established in 1981, which is a
student body of the Department, with an objective to organize the
following activities to
(1) advance the interest of students in
academics, other than those which form part of the
curriculum
(2) promote the talents of its members by organizing
various cultural and sports competitions and
(3) look after the
general interests of its members, working in coordination with the
teaching staff of the Department.
This society also publishes an
annual technical journal,
SHIPSTECHNIC which contains papers form eminent
authorities in the field, Several seminars and lecturers on various
aspects of ship design and construction related subjects have also
been organised by the department. Ph. D. programme is also
available in the Department Research areas covers materials testing
and fatigue analysis related to marine structures, hydrodynamics of
marine vehicles and development of CAD/CAM techniques applicable to
marine industry.
The Department has already completed sponsored
research schemes valued at Rs.5.00 lakhs. Two are presently in
progress(Rs.200 lakhs) and one is awaiting approval. The department
maintains active collaboration and interaction with various
Universities in Germany, IIT Madras, and the various shipyards in
India, Its faculty has published about 40 articles in journals of
repute. Seminars organized include
Current trends in research
& Teaching in Naval Architecture and
Current trends in
Design and Analysis of Ship Offshore Structures.
