Devil World (デビルワールド) is a Family Computer game developed by Nintendo, and released in Japan on October 5, 1984, and later released in Europe on the NES. It was also released on the Wii's Virtual Console on January 22, 2008 for Japan and in Europe and Australia on October 31, 2008. The game had similar gameplay to that of Pac-Man. It is the only game designed by Shigeru Miyamoto that has not been released in North America, despite the fact that the game is simple and in English. This was due to Nintendo of America's strict policies on the use of religious icons in games, which were at their strictest level at the time of the game's original release.

Players control Tamagon, a green dragon who decides to "attack the Devil's World", along with a red Player 2 version of him. He navigates through a series of mazes and touches Crosses to power up and summon the ability to breathe fire and eat the dots in the maze. Without a cross, he is completely helpless, and cannot complete the maze. The large winged demon simply called "the Devil" dances at the top of the screen, pointing the direction for his minions to move the maze. This can be dangerous, as Tamagon can be squished by getting caught between a maze wall and the moving outer boundary. After the first maze is cleared, the next objective is to get four Bibles, and put them into a seal. The Bibles give Tamagon the same powers as with the Crosses. After carrying them all into the seal, the Devil flies to the next maze. In between, a bonus maze shows up where Tamagon collects six Bonus Boxes under a time limit. The pattern then repeats.
The minions in Devil World have a similar resemblence to the Waddle Doo's in Kirbys Adventure but do not fire beams.

Devil World is an obscure title for the Famicom that was released in Japan and Europe, but was passed over for release in the States. The obvious reason for this passing was because of the heavy use of religious iconography, and Nintendo's concern for religious sensitivity in America. Though the character in the game can clearly be viewed as a good guy, if only for the fact that the person he is battling is the devil, the mere use of the symbolic cross was thought to be potentially insulting to anyone observant of the Christian faith.
This game is probably one of Shigeru Miyamoto's least well known designs. It borrows heavily from Pac-Man, but deviates from it substantially. The biggest departure is that while the entire maze is visible on the screen, it automatically scrolls continuously beyond the player's control. Boundaries set up along the edges of the screen create the potential for the player to become trapped and squashed between the boundary and the maze itself. The character Tamagon was never used in any game after Devil World, although he is rumored to have been the inspiration for Yoshi of Super Mario fame. A trophy for Tamagon was included in Super Smash Bros. Melee, but was once again removed from the US release. A cheating device can enable the viewing of the trophy, where the name of the game has been conspicuously changed from Devil World to Demon World (once again, probably out of fear of religious reprisal.)
You are Tamagon, an egg hatched fire breathing dragon. You are trapped in the Devil's mazes, along with his minions who try to put a stop to you. Your mission is to imprison the Devil by completing the goals of three stages. There is no end sequence to this game, it continues indefinitely.
