Dharmavaram is the fourth biggest village in Anantapur district.It is a municipality located in Anantapur district in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is famous throughout India for producing silk sarees. The Dharmavaram Temples are important places of pilgrimage. Puttaparthi, the birth place and abode of Sathya Sai Baba is situated 42 km from Dharmavaram. Dharmavaram is a railway junction which falls under South Central Railway Zone of Indian Railways. Dharmavaram is just 39 km away from Anantapur city. It is one of the Revenue divisions in the district. Dharmavaram is also one of the Roads & Bungalows (R&B) division.

The novel 'Warp & Weft' written by J Vinay, a Bangalore-born, Manchester-based author is set in Dharmavaram. The book details the rustic lifestyle in a lively manner.

Dharmavaram is located at 14°26′N 77°43′E / 14.43°N 77.72°E / 14.43; 77.72.[1] It has an average elevation of 345 metres (1131 feet).

Demographics

As of 2006 India census,[2] Dharmavaram had a population of 150,400. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Dharmavaram has an average literacy rate of 56%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 65% and, female literacy is 46%. In Dharmavaram, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Notable points

Dharmavaram is a famous hub for silk. There is an area itself dedicated for weaving and selling of silk clothes. The brand of silk weaved here is one of the most famous silks in the country. The railway station itself being a junction, almost all trains stop here for at least five minutes. There is a lake in Dharmavaram village called Chitravati lake.

Assembly constituency

Dharmavaram is an assembly constituency in Andhra Pradesh.

Factionism has been a major concern here for the past few decades, with violent incidents being reported occasionally.

But it has changed a lot now and you hardly see any kind of factionism in Dharmavaram. City is in peace now.
