DICT is a dictionary network protocol created by the DICT Development Group. It is described by RFC 2229. Its goal is to surpass the Webster protocol and to allow clients to access more dictionaries during use. Dict servers and clients use TCP port 2628.

  • Lingvo English-Russian and Russian-English dictionaries are not free, but when purchased, can easily be converted into DICT format

DICT clients

There are also programs that read the DICT file format directly. For example, S60Dict is a dictionary program for Symbian Series 60 that uses DICT dictionaries.

Dict.org is a free online dictionary maintained by the DICT Development Group. In addition to providing an extensive search through over 200,000 words, Dict.org brags connections to over 70 databases ranging from thesauruses to almanacs, and translators to ZIP code libraries. 55 of the databases alone are primarily language translators offering translations between a myriad of major tongues from all over the world.
