Dig Dug II is the arcade sequel to Dig Dug, released by Namco in 1985. It runs on Namco Super Pac-Man hardware but with a video system like that used in Mappy. In 2005, it was ported to the PlayStation Portable in Namco Museum Battle Collection and is included in Namco Museum DS released for the Nintendo DS on September 18, 2007 in the United States.

It is also released on the Wii Virtual Console in Japan on October 20, 2009 along with the first game.

Gameplay

Unlike the first game, Dig Dug II takes place on an island with an overhead view. The goal is simple: to kill all the enemies on the level. There are two types: Pookas, the round red monsters with goggles, can only touch the protagonist to kill him, but Fygars, the dragons, can breathe fire to burn the protagonist, as well as by touching.

In this game, Taizo Hori (the player's character) is armed with two weapons. One is the pump from the original Dig Dug, which is used to inflate enemies until they burst. The other is a jackhammer, which can be used at dark spots on the map to create faults in the ground. If both ends of a system of faults reach the water, the ground surrounded by them will sink into the ocean, killing all creatures on it, including Taizo himself. The points earned from this depend on how many enemies are killed at once. After level 31, the levels have the same layout as the one 16 levels before it.

When only one, two, or on harder levels-three enemies remains on the map, it will eventually go to the edge of the island and jump off, killing itself and denying you points.

Dig Dug II was less popular than its predecessor, and the Famicom version was brought to the U.S. by Bandai.

The Namco Museum DS version has a stage select, for levels 1-15. However, it is only in multiples of 5, so levels 1, 5, etc.

2 versions

As shown in Namco Museum DS, there were 2 versions of this game. There was a harder old version, and an easier new version, both versions had completely different levels. The newer version had a lot more machines than the old, and almost every port of this game was of the newer version. The only port of the older version was in Namco Museum DS which includes the newer version as well.

Dig Dug II is one of Namco's more obscure titles. It takes the characters from the original Dig Dug and places them in a new environment. The action no longer takes place underground, but rather on top of small islands. The islands are usually larger than the width of the screen, so the action scrolls horizontally.

Once again, Dig Dug must rid the world of Pookas and Fygars. This time he has two weapons at his immediate disposal. He still has his trusty pump which can be used to fill enemies with air until they pop. But he also has a jackhammer, which can be used to weaken faults on the island and create cracks along the ground. When a section of the island is completely separated by cracks the smaller component of the island falls off into the sea, taking any enemy on its surface with it. If Dig Dug does not plan carefully, he could end up drowning as a result of his own jackhammering.

Dig Dug II never came close to the level of popularity that the first Dig Dug enjoyed. It was ported to both the Famicom Disk System and the NES/Famicom, and it was ported very successfully. It retained every feature of the arcade game, and more than doubled the number of distinct levels from 32 to 72. Later NES levels were decorated with different themes besides islands, such as a volcano. After the Nintendo DS launched, Namco released a game Dig Dug: Digging Strike that bridged the two Dig Dug games together, as well as cement Dig Dug's relationship to Mr. Driller.

Story

Dig Dug is on the job once again. Several islands have been infested with Pookas and Fygars and Dig Dug must get rid of them... even if it means demolishing half of the island. When he pumps the enemies or sinks them in the sea, Dig Dug must hop from one island to the next exterminating the nuisances.
