^ Canon EOS 40D is a 10.1-megapixel digital single-lens reflex (SLR) camera.

.The basic operation of a DSLR is as follows: for viewing purposes, the mirror reflects the light coming through the attached lens upwards at a 90 degree angle.^ Basically the DSLR uses the front lens , mirrors and prism to capture the light and reflect it to the eyepiece or viewfinder.

^ The mirror in a single lens reflex (SLR) camera reflects light upwards through a pentaprism to be viewed.

^ A mirror is fixed which will direct the light from the lens to the prism for viewing.

Comparison with digital point-and-shoot camera

^ During exposure (when the photograph is taken), the mirror swings upward, and a shutter opens, allowing the lens to project light onto the image sensor.

.There is often a ring of soft material around the focusing screen, which helps to both cushion the impact of the mirror slapping up and help seal the mirror box from light entering through the eye piece.^ Light entering the top lens is reflected up by a fixed mirror to a viewing screen.

^ Momentarily before the shutter is opened a mirror flicks up and the light passing through the lens is allowed to hit the sensitive surface of the market.

DSLR design considerations

Pentaprism vs. penta-mirror

.Most of the entry level DSLRs use a pentamirror instead of the traditional pentaprism.^ If you need to use wide apertures in daylight most DSLRs have very, very fast shutters to let you do this at ISO 200.

Depth-of-field control

The lenses typically used on DSLRs have a wider range of apertures available to them, ranging from as large as f/1.0 to about f/32. Lenses for digicams rarely have true available aperture sizes much larger than f/2.8 or much smaller than f/5.6.
.The f/5.6 limitation is because lens designs of typical small sensor digicams already produce diffraction blur bigger than a few pixels at f/5.6.[14] Because of digicams' smaller sensors there are a limited number of apertures available that will produce an acceptably sharp image.^ A higher number indicates a smaller aperture.

.Put another way, with both cameras at f/2.8 and focused on a subject 1 meter from the camera, and both cameras zoomed to produce the same angle of view (35 mm camera will need to use larger focal length to produce same angle of view from same distance), the digicam might have a depth of field of 2 meters and the larger camera would have a depth of field of 0.3 meters.^ The lens focal length usually indicates the field or angle of view produced by the lens.

Angle of view

An APS-C format SLR (left) and a full-frame DSLR (right) show the difference in the size of the image sensors.
.The angle of view of a lens depends upon its focal length and the camera's image sensor size; a sensor smaller than 35 mm film format (36 mm × 24 mm frame) gives a narrower angle of view for a lens of a given focal length than a camera equipped with a full-frame (35 mm) sensor.^ The angle of view created by a telephoto lens is the same as that created by an ordinary lens of the same specified focal length.

While the only defining feature of an SLR is its reflex viewfinder system, extant digital SLR models generally offer the following advantages over fixed-lens cameras of the same generation:
.

  • Generally greater size and weight.[40]
  • Generally greater cost.[40]
  • Few DSLRs with a video mode.[40] .With the exception of cameras such as the Nikon D90 and the Canon EOS 5D Mark II[41], few DSLRs produced so far can record full-motion video, while this has become a standard feature of compact digital cameras.

SLR-like cameras – "bridge cameras"

.The "SLR-like" or "advanced" digicams offer a non-optical electronic through-the-lens (TTL) view through the focusing lens, via the eye-level electronic viewfinder (EVF) as well as the rear LCD. The difference in views compared to a DSLR is that the EVF shows a digitally-created TTL image, whereas the viewfinder in a DSLR shows an actual optical TTL image via the reflex viewing system.^ The digital single- lens reflex (SLR) camera’s viewfinder shows you (more or less) the exact image the sensor sees.

.An EVF image has lag time (that is, it reacts with a delay to view changes and has a lower resolution than an optical viewfinder) but achieves parallax-free viewing using less bulk and mechanical complexity than a DSLR with its reflex viewing system.^ The SLR (Single Lens Reflex) digital camera from Mustek is more than a tool for taking picture, it is a system of instruments designed to take the perfect photo - in any light.

^ Fixed-focus, fixed-zoom lenses - These are the kinds of lenses on disposable and inexpensive film cameras — inexpensive and great for snapshots, but fairly limited.

.Manufacturers have attempted (with increasing success) to overcome this disadvantage by offering extreme ranges of focal length on models known as superzooms, some of which offer far longer focal lengths than readily available DSLR lenses.^ (In current dSLR models, the focal length conversion factor can range from 1.3 to 1.7.
