DisneyToon Studios is an American animated direct-to-video sequel production company and a division of Walt Disney Animation Studios.

DisneyToon Studios Australia and DisneyToon Studios France (see also Walt Disney Animation Australia and Walt Disney Animation France), formerly known as Disney Television Animation Australia and Disney Television Animation France, was in two parts of DisneyToon Studios based in Sydney, Australia and Paris, France. Originally one of several Disney television animation satellite studios, responsible for programs such as Goof Troop, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, Bonkers, Quack Pack, Darkwing Duck, Timon and Pumbaa, and Aladdin. DisneyToon Studios was the main producer of the many Disney sequels and direct-to-video films (among them most of the above-mentioned films, along with the theatrically-released Return to Neverland, The Jungle Book 2, and Piglet's Big Movie). Until 2009, it was the last in-house Disney facility that produced traditional animation.

History

Walt Disney Animation Australia and Walt Disney Animation Paris had worked on both feature length Disney films and television series since its debut in 1988.

Though the studio did a large amount of work in television during the 1990s, they began to focus entirely on film, under the DisneyToons banner. Nowadays, work on Disney's animated television shows is usually outsourced to Rough Draft Studios, Wang Film Productions, Kennedy Cartoons, Toon City, and Sunwoo, among others.

At the time, DisneyToon Studios Australia and DisneyToon Studios France were the last Disney owned 2D animation studios, as other animaion divisions of the company had moved on to producing CGI films. Both units were used for saving on production costs, as it was more expensive for Disney to produce the films in the United States; production would start in the USA and the animation would be done in the Australia or France studios.

On July 25, 2005, Disney announced that it was closing DisneyToon Studios Australia in October 2006, after 17 years of existence.[1] The closing was attributed to the rising costs of animation production in Australia. DisneyToon Studios would produce its animated films (both traditional and computer-generated) primarily through outsourcing to third party companies after the closure.

On June 22, 2007, management of DisneyToon Studios was turned over to the control of Ed Catmull and John Lasseter under the banner of the recently formed Walt Disney Animation Studios. The previous president of the division, Sharon Morill moved to a new position in the company.[2] As a result, all future films in production or set to go into production at DisneyToon that weren't connected to a Consumer Product Line were cancelled, including sequels to Dumbo, Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons and The Aristocats.[3][4] A few days later, it was announced that DisneyToon would no longer produce future sequels to Disney animated films, but will instead focus on spin-offs and original films.[5]
