History

In February 2007, Disney Cruise Line announced that it had commissioned two new ships for its fleet.[4] The first steel-cut, for scrollwork on the ship's hull, took place in March 2009 at the Meyer Werft shipyards in Papenburg, Germany.[5] Later that month, the two ships were named, with the Disney Dream set to enter service first, followed by its sister vessel, the Disney Fantasy.[6]

The Disney Dream was unveiled at a major press conference in New York City, on October 29th, 2009.

Features

The Disney Dream will be a much larger ship than its two older fleet-mates, the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, with a design gross tonnage (GT) of 128,000 tons,[7] a length of 330 meters and a width of 37 meters. Also the Disney Dream will have wi-fi throughout the ship, and every stateroom will have a flat panel TV.[8]. The Disney Dream's horn signal will be the first seven notes of When You Wish Upon A Star, along with the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, the horn is considered the most recognizable ship horn of all ships at sea[9]. The Dream will have 1,250 staterooms. The ship will also feature the first water coaster at sea, called "The Aquaduck". The Disney Dream is, 45,000 tons larger, 5 decks higher (3 passenger), 151 feet longer, its beam is 15 ft wider, it can hold over 1600 more passengers, and has 555 more crew members than the Disney Magic, and Disney Wonder.[10]

Recreation

Aboard the Disney Dream there will be many recreational activities. On Deck 13,(Goofy's Sports Deck), there will be a 9 hole mini-golf course, and digital simulators that provide virtual game experiences such as soccer, tennis, basketball, golf, and a walking track around the deck. There will also be the AquaDuck, Mickey's Slide, 3 pools, and 2 mini-sized sports courts for younger children. There's full-court basketball that can be changed into soccer pitches, volleyball court, and there will be foosball & table tennis. All pools on the Disney Dream are fresh water pools. The Quiet Cove Pool includes a swim up bar and a series of connecting pools with depths ranging from 4 ft to 6 inch sun-bathing pools. The Mickey & Donald Pool's were placed in the same area so families and children can be close together. There will be a 30 x 18 ft LCD screen facing Donald's Pool, hanging from the funnel. The will also be hottubs for adults & families.[11]
