Dmitry Boldyrev, digital media revolutionare, born in 1975 in
Moscow, Russia is the inventor and creator of the first MP3 player,
MacAmp.
MacAmp was ported to Windows by
Justin Frankel around mid-1997 and named WinAmp.
It is a common misconception that Justin Frankel was the creator of
WinAmp.
MacAmp development was going on long before Justin Frankel even found out about MP3 technology.
Dmitry grew up in town nearby Moscow,
Chernogolovka.
It was a very scientific oriented community and therefore was very advanced
in computer technology, even back in the early 80s.
Dmitry grew up playing piano before he discovered that music could be
applied to computers.
He then started writing music applications, his first ones were written on a 286 PC MusEd.zip and DigiPl.zip, still available on the internet.
He then migrated to the United States around 1991 to Salt Lake City where he stayed for 6 years and attended
University of Utah Computer Science / Engineering department.
During those years he worked at the Department of Chemistry doing
3D molecule visualization on early Macs (Quadra 900, 7100, etc).
He ported
MikMod to Mac, called MacMikMod, DSM, and finally lead to creation of MacAmp.
He met
Justin Frankel, who became the developer of WinAmp.
Justin was involved with programming graphics rendering engines, so they decided to start a demo group they called
Nullsoft.
However, it quickly became apparent that we were chosen to lead the digital music revolution on the internet for the next 10 years.
When he was younger, he was once given a chance to actually fly the
Tu-154 russian jet airplane on its way from Bulgaria.
This inspired him to move to Seattle, Washington and accept a job at Universal Avionics corporation for 2 years working on Synthetic Vision and Terrain Awareness cockpit panels.
Recently, Dmitry restarted his activity in software development by bringing back to life
Subband Technologies.
