From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne, a Roman Catholic order of nuns under the authority of the Dominican Order, were founded on December 8, 1900, by Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, daughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne. They termed themselves "the Servants of Relief for Incurable Cancer", and their purpose was to provide for the well-being of incurably ill and destitute cancer patients.

Early in life, Rose Hawthorne married George Parsons Lathrop. After his death in 1889, she chose to join herself to the Roman Catholic Church and founded the order as Mother Mary Alphonsa. Alice Huber was one of the first to join Lathrop in this effort.
