The term
door desk was made popular by Amazon.com. It simply refers to a desk that was
constructed using a door, often to avoid the high cost of
professionally built desks. Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon.com, created
these desks for the first office used by the company in the
interest of saving money. The company has carried this tradition as
many company employees still sit at a door. Often this is something
that geek culture uses to poke fun at Amazon. Three of the first
door desks were sold during the launch of Amazon.com's new auction
site. According to some of Amazon's first employees the general
plans for the company's desks were a hollow core door attached to
some 4"x4" legs with angle brackets.
