DormItem is a self-funded
Web 2.0 start-up company based in
Boston, Massachusetts founded by college students Dan Scudder and Zack Coburn.
History, products and services
Scudder hired a programmer to build an early version of DormItem in the Spring of 2006.
Scudder and Coburn met in the Summer of 2006 when Coburn was operating
Madhens, an auction-based Web advertising platform.
Coburn and Scudder, students of the
Franklin W.
Olin College of Engineering and
Babson College respectively, met in person in the Fall of 2006.
Coburn built the second and current version of DormItem using
Ruby on Rails over the course of the next month.
DormItem launched on
November 10,
2006 and was featured on tech news blog
Techcrunch <ref> </ref>.
DormItem is a college classifieds search engine, and it aggregates content from niche college sites (such as
The Daily Jolt marketplace) across the country.
Once DormItem gathers the content, the microregional searching system in the site allows college students to see classified listings from their school and other schools in their area, bridging the gap between college marketplaces.
DormItem also integrates the
Rapleaf ratings system, which helps promote safe trading among college students.
