Dumuzid, "the Shepherd", from Bad-tibira in Sumer, was the 5th pre-dynastic king on the Sumerian king list (before ca. 2900 BC).
He is considered a precursor to the Babylonian god Tammuz. According to a story found on a broken tablet known as "Inanna prefers the Farmer," he and the farmer-diety Enkimdu argued for some time over who would win the hand of the goddess Inanna. The tablet is broken at this point, and the rest was never found, but later stories make it clear that Dumuzid was chosen.
