The Health Sciences Campus is one of the three campuses of East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. The campus is located approximately two miles west of the main campus. The campus sits adjacent to Pitt County Memorial Hospital. The campus consists of 31 buildings including the Brody Medical Sciences Building, Health Sciences Building and East Carolina Heart Institute. The School of Dentistry site is currently under construction. [1]



The three largest buildings on this campus are the Brody Medical Sciences Building, Health Sciences Building and the East Carolina Heart Institute. The oldest building is the Brody Building, opened in 1982. The East Carolina Heart Institute, the newest building, opened in 2009.


Brody Medical Sciences Building

The Brody Medical Sciences Building is a 489,000-square-foot facility opened in 1982 and expanded in 1989-90. It houses the Brody School of Medicine. The building is situated beside Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

Health Sciences Building

The Health Sciences Building is a four-story, 303,000-square-foot building that has 296 offices, 31 classrooms, 30 class labs, eight open labs and 25 research labs. It is the sole residence of the College of Allied Health Sciences, College of Nursing and Laupus Library. The $66 million building officially opened on September 22, 2006.[2]

East Carolina Heart Institute

The East Carolina Heart Institute is a unique partnership which includes University Health Systems' Pitt County Memorial Hospital(PCMH) and East Carolina University(ECU) along with cardiovascular experts in private practice, academic medicine and research. The East Carolina Heart Institute is the first in North Carolina devoted exclusively to education, research, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. ECHI has two primary facilities: The Heart Institute at ECU for outpatient services and ECU research facilities and the Heart Institute at PCMH is a state-of-the-art 120-bed tower, with ORs, procedure rooms, interventional labs, diagnostics, and patient and family support services.

The East Carolina Heart Institute is divided up into two buildings. The East Carolina Heart Institute at ECU is the outpatient and research facility. The East Carolina Heart Institute at PCMH is a six-story cardiovascular bed tower.

The six-story, $150 million, 375,000 sq. ft. cardiovascular bed tower at Pitt County Memorial Hospital houses operating rooms, 13 interventional labs and 120 patient beds.

The ECU building houses offices and research labs for cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, vascular surgeons and scientists. The four-story, $60 million, 206,000 sq. ft. building also houses outpatient treatment facilities and educational facilities for students, physicians and scientists.

Future buildings

The School of Dentistry and the corresponding facilities are being built on this campus. The school is scheduled to open in 2011.
