Speleers was born at St. Richard's Hospital, Chichester, West Sussex.
He is an only child. His parents are divorced and his mother resides in Spain. His father, John, is a financial consultant.
He enrolled at Dorset House School at Bury, near Arundel, when he was seven.
He finished his secondary school education at Eastbourne College, where he was a scholarship student.
He has two tattoos. One is located at his left waist and reads "Ramble on", and the other is on his right forearm and is a five-pointed star, representing his five best friends.[1]
Prior to Eragon, Speleers appeared in school productions such as Peter Pan, Richard III, and Hamlet. While at Eastbourne College, Speleers wrote a play, Retribution, with his friend Rob Curran, which investigated the subjects of child abuse and paedophilia.
Speleers also acted in a short film by Charlie Bleakley, called Metropolis. He had auditioned for a number of film roles, such as Peter Pevensie in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. He lost out in the final auditions to William Moseley. He beat out 180,000 hopefuls, to land the title role of the multi-million dollar screen version of Eragon.[2]
In 2008, he appeared in the British soap opera Echo Beach as Jimmy Penwarden, the local 'hottie' but small town boy.
He is represented in the USA by Jennifer Rawlings at William Morris Endeavor, and in the UK by Ruth Young at United Agents. His manager is Matthew Hobbs at Firefly.
Speleers joined Firefly in 2009, as is Senior Vice President [1].
