The team's parent athletic club was founded in the year 1931 as Ierapolis Athletic Union (in Greek: Αθλητική Ένωσις Ιεράπολις) and the basketball division of the athletic organization was founded in the year 1956, by Alexandros Stavropoulos.

History

Although the basketball department was founded in 1956, it took exactly fifty years to participate into the A1 division (2006-07 season), which is the highest professional basketball league in Greece. During the '50s and '60s the team remained in the lowest local (third) division, until 1971 when it qualified for the higher league, because of a new categories planning. In 1973 and 1974 Egaleo BC won two promotions and finally took part in B' Ethniki (1974-75 & 1975-76 seasons). For the next 12 years the team participated in the first local league (A' E.S.K.A.) except 1981-82 period, when it was in B' E.S.K.A., after 1981's relegation. During late '80s and early '90s Egaleo BC participated into C' Ethniki (six seasons totally), but was relegated again to the local league in 1994. In 1997 it won the A' E.S.K.A.'s Championship and after two years (1999) Egaleo BC returned to B' Ethniki (six seasons totally). In 2004 Egaleo BC won the B' Ethniki Championship and after having a short presence in A2 Ethniki it promoted for the A1 (2006). The club is located in Athens but it does not have the financial resources to compete in the same manner as the other Athenian teams like Panathinaikos BC, Olympiacos BC, AEK Athens BC, Panionios BC, Panellinios BC and Maroussi BC. From 1999 to 2006, the team was coached by Dimitrios Karvelas and after him, Athanasios Skourtopoulos took this position.
