Youth career

Insúa began his football career with youth team Pinocho in Argentina, later moving to, Buenos Aires-based team, Boca Juniors.[1] The left-back did not break into the first-team at La Bombonera when he caught the attention of scouts from Liverpool.[2] After some solid performances for the Argentinian U17s, many clubs were desperate to sign him, a player who rarely had appearences for his then club, and Boca were also very keen to get a profit from this young prodigy which led to negotiations between Liverpool F.C and Boca. The defender agreed to an 18 month loan deal with the Merseyside club on 28 November 2006, beginning his loan period in January.[3]

Liverpool F.C.

Insúa soon got a chance to impress, making his first-team debut against Portsmouth on 28 April 2007.[2] However, he only made one more league appearance that season.[4]

His loan deal was made permanent in August 2007 in the deal which saw Gabriel Paletta moved to Boca Juniors [5]. The following season Insúa made only three more first-team league appearances but found success with Gary Ablett's Premier Reserve League winning team; along with other Liverpool FC youngsters.[6] His performances impressed manager Rafael Benítez enough to offer him a new deal at the club. Insúa signed a three year contract on 2 July 2008,[7]. Insua was given the number 22 shirt for the start of the 2008-2009 campaign.[8] In December 2008 Insua got a run of games in the Liverpool team, due to an injury to Fábio Aurélio and also due to the disappointing form of Andrea Dossena. His biggest opportunity came on December 21, 2008 against Arsenal F.C. Insua greatly impressed during his spell of games, leaving many fans believing that he is almost Liverpool's first choice left back.

On 5 January 2009, Liverpool announced that Emiliano would be participating in the 2009 South American Youth Championship in Venezuela, meaning he would miss crucial Premier League matches, including the clash with title rivals Chelsea FC. However, Argentina finished bottom of the final group stage, meaning that they failed to qualify for the U-20 World Cup and would be unable to defend their title. Upon his return to Liverpool, and after a brief spell in the reserves, Insúa became increasingly part of the Liverpool first team squad.

Due to an injury to Fábio Aurélio, Insúa found himself starting in Liverpool's opening six Premier League games and the first tie of their Champions League campaign, beating off competition from Andrea Dossena. He gave a good account of himself defending and going forward and is seen both as a bright prospect for the future and a current first team player.

He scored his first goal for Liverpool in a Football League Cup match against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on 28 October 2009.[9] It was one of those goals that lit up the night, with Ryan Babel's brilliant lay-off, before Insua volleyed and at the same time trivela the ball, to give it swerve, dip and speed, which caught Fabianski, who was only about a yard out and was a strong contender for the goal of the season. Even the supplier of the ball for the Arsenal F.C-Liverpool F.C match commented on the goal: “Insua’s shot was preceded with a pinpoint pass, controlled layoff and an ideal bounce, with the ball falling on to the boot and then struck by a Master." “It was struck with power on the outside of the foot to give side-spin to make the ball bend left, below the centre of gravity to make the ball rise and, finally, with top spin to make it dip as it approached the goal. With 25 years developing balls, I still get a huge kick out of seeing a perfect strike make a great goal.”[10]

Liverpool Midfielder and Argentina's captain, Javier Mascherano thinks that Insua is bound for big things and reminded everyone that he's only 20, and would only get better in time. "It isn't easy to be playing for the Liverpool first team at just 20-years-old. I'm really happy for him." "Emiliano didn't play first-team football in Argentina, so to come here at such a young age and make the breakthrough is a great achievement." Also, Mascherano stated that Insua would have been better off had he played first-team football in Argentina before coming to Liverpool, something that Liverpool is offering him, despite strong competition from Fabio Aurelio. "But after just two years he is playing really well whenever he gets into the first team." [11]

On 30 January 2010, in a match against Bolton Wanderers at Anfield, Insúa put in what seemed to be a Man Of The Match performance by playing a part in both goals scored in the 2-0 victory. Firstly, his cross was headed down by Alberto Aquilani before Dirk Kuyt slotted home. On the second occasion, his shot was turned in by Kevin Davies. By the first week of February 2010, Insua had already provided 6 assists, which was the highest number of assists provided by any full back in the Premier League for the season 2009-2010.

International career

The player succeeded on the Under-20's international scene, playing 3 games to finish with the runner-up medal at the South American U-20 Championship, which served as a qualifier for the World U-20 World Cup where he played seven games, conceding just 4 goals in the entire tournament and aiding the Argentina Under-20 team to victory against the Czech Republic in the FIFA U-20 World Cup final on 22 July 2007.[12]

On 24 August, Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez said that Diego Maradona was monitoring the progress of Insúa and considering calling him up for international duty with Argentina.[13] Maradona eventually did call him up on 26 September 2009, for the crucial World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Uruguay, making his first start in a 2-1 win over Peru.[14]
