Introduction

THIS chapter is closely connected in sense with the preceding, and should not have been separated from it. The great object is to illustrate the subject which was commenced in the previous chapter, (Eph 1:19) -- the greatness of the POWER of God, evinced in the salvation of his people. The great manifestation of his power had been in raising up the Lord Jesus from the dead. That had been connected with and followed by their resurrection from the death of sin; and the one had involved the exercise of a power similar to the other. In the illustration of this main idea, the apostle observes (Eph 2:1) that God had quickened those who had been dead in trespasses and sins, and proceeds (Eph 2:2, Eph 2:3) to show the condition which they were before their conversion. He then observes Eph 2:4ff that God, of his infinite mercy, when they were dead in sin, had quickened them together with Christ, and had raised them up to sit with him in heavenly places. He then states that this was not by human power, but was the work of Divine power, and that they were the workmanship of God, Eph 2:8ff. The remainder of the chapter Eph 2:11ff is occupied with a statement of the privileges resulting from the mercy of God in calling them into his kingdom. The apostle endeavours to impress their minds strongly with a sense of the mercy and love and power of God in thus calling them to himself. He reminds them of their former condition when Gentiles, as being without God, and that they were now brought nigh by the blood of Christ, Eph 2:11ff; he states that this had been done by one great Mediator, who came to break down the wall of partition between the Jews and Gentiles, and who had now made both one, Eph 2:14ff; and he compares them now to a temple raised for God, and to constitute the place of his dwelling on the earth, Eph 2:19ff. By all these considerations he endeavours to impress their minds with a sense of obligation, and to lead them to devote themselves to that God who had raised them from the dead, and had breathed into them the breath of immortal life.

1: And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; edit

2: Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: edit

3: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. edit

4: But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, edit

5: Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) edit

6: And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: edit

7: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. edit

8: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: edit

9: Not of works, lest any man should boast. edit

10: For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. edit

11: Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; edit

12: That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: edit

13: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. edit

14: For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; edit

15: Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; edit

16: And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: edit

17: And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. edit

18: For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. edit

19: Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; edit

20: And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; edit

21: In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: edit

22: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. edit
