Eric Darnell is an American director, writer, voice actor, songwriter and animator. He is the co-director of Antz and Madagascar, and directed Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. He attended Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village, Kansas, where he was a writer for the school newspaper the Harbinger. He studied broadcast journalism at the University of Colorado at Boulder. After graduating in '83, he spent four years working on experimental films, which helped him get accepted into the Experimental Animation program study at the California Institute of the Arts. When he graduated he joined Pacific Data Images and worked on the Hanna-Barbera's Halloween special The Last Holloween as Character Animator. He also directed the short film Gas Planet. He also worked as director on R.E.M music video. He also made his directorial tribute for the movie Antz for PDI/DreamWorks. He then worked as the writer for the Welcome to Duloc song on Shrek. In 2005 he and Tom McGrath directed Madagascar and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa in 2006. He was co-writer for the Christmas TV Special, A Merry Madagascar. He is currently working on Madagascar 3 which will premiere the summer of 2012.
