Exte ( エクステ Ekusute) is a 2007 Japanese horror film written and directed by Sion Sono, and stars Chiaki Kuriyama, Ren Osugi, and Megumi Sato.
Customs agents discover a huge amount of human hair used as materials for 'hair extensions', along with the dead body of a young girl with a shaved head. With the corpse soon being transported by the police, the results of the autopsy determine that the woman's internal organs have been harvested. The possibility is pointed out that she was kidnapped in some foreign country and was a victim of a black market human organ racketeering ring. A sinister, fearless smirk comes over Yamazaki (Ren Osugi), the morgue night watchman.
Yuko (Chiaki Kuriyama) is a young wannabe hair stylist apprenticing at a hair salon. After working late each day, after returning home, she tirelessly practices her skills on head mannequins with wigs. One day, her sister, Kiyomi, forcibly entrusts her eight-year-old daughter, Mami, to Yuko. For some reason, Mami is abnormally timid and frightened and has several wounds on her body from abuse.
Meanwhile, Yamazaki cuddles up with the corpse of the girl he stole from the morgue which now occupies his room. Hair has begun to grow from her head once again, not only from her head but from where her organs were removed: the scars on her stomach and even her empty eye socket.
Later, Yamazaki shows up at Yuko's salon with Mami who got lost looking for Yuko. Yamazaki takes one look at Yuko and is captivated by her lovely flowing hair. He then feels embarrassed and runs off. Yuko then leaves work to go and take Mami home and sees all the disaster she caused in Yuko's room. In anger, she tells Mami to stay and not touch anything, not even to clean up and returns back to the salon. Later, Yuko arrives back home and sees that Mami has cleaned the apartment and has been kneeling on the floor, waiting for Yuko to come home. Filled with remorse, Yuko had brought Mami home some new clothes and tells her to 'relax' and teaches her less formal ways to answering like 'Yeah' and 'Gotcha' instead of 'Yes', and asks her to call her 'Sis'.
The next day, when Yuko and her roommate are out the house, Kiyomi fools Mami into letting her into Yuko's house where she proceeds to steal clothes and thrash the place, and take Mami with her (also taking an extension with her). Upon arriving at Kiyomi's boyfriend's house, she beats up Mami and puts her in a closet. The extension hair starts to grow and proceeds to attack, thus killing Kiyomi and her lover. Mami escapes by jumping over the balcony into a bush.
At the hospital, Yuko is approached by detectives who ask her to verify the corpse of her half-sister. With minor injuries, Mami tells Yuko and the detectives that a 'hair monster' killed her mum. The hair attacks once again and kills Kondo, a fellow worker at Yuko's salon. Meanwhile, the DNA results come back and the detectives find out that the hair from all the cases (that should've came from 30 different women) were actually from the same woman - the missing corpse.
Yuko brings Mami into the salon to be her 'model', in which her boss gives her, and other girls in the salon, exactly 45 minutes to finish cutting their model's hair as it is a test of speed, not skill. Struggling to keep up with the time, Yuko decides to add in extensions in Mami's hair. The test is then interrupted as the 2 detectives arrive at the salon to ask questions. Despite this, Yuko continues to cut Mami's hair and finishes. Yuki then takes Mami home as the detectives question everyone about the extensions they received. After hearing everything, Yuko makes the connection and in horror, rushes home to Mami.
Whilst Mami is playing with her new mannequin that Yuko gave her, hair begins to seep out of the fax machine. Mami then proceeds to cut a strand of hair on the mannequin which to her and Yuko's horror, begins to ooze out blood. Yuki turns around and realises that the hair has spread through the whole room. Telling Mami not to look around, she takes her into the next room and shuts them in. However, the hair starts to spread through the cracks and takes over the room. Telling Mami to run, Yuki looks in horror as Mami's hair extensions have grown too and the hair wraps around her and lifts her off the ground and kills her.
Yuko arrives home and upon opening the door, finds that hair has completely blocked it. She forces her way through blindly and manages to reach the room Mami and Yuki are hiding in. Gasping for air, she looks around and finds Yuki's body hanging by the hair and Mami unconscious on the floor. As Yuko struggles to break the hair, a pair of scissors drops besides her. Unfortunately, before she can cut, the hair knocks her back and wraps itself around her neck and chokes her. As Yuko falls to the floor, unconscious, the hair begins to enter her mouth. However, Tamazaki runs in and tells it to leave the girls alone, to which it obeys. Yamazaki takes Mami and Yuko to his house, where he discovers the detectives caught in the hair, who searched his house when they discovered he was the killer. He reveals his locked anger for the years of mistreatment they gave him at the morgue and proceeds to beat a detective to death as Yuko wakes up.
Yamazaki explains the dead girl's story, of how she waas kidnapped and her eye and organs were sold on the black market for money, but her hair - enraged - held the grudge and now attacks society in revenge. He explains how he admired Yuko and Mami, living in a house surrounded by hair and doing something useful with their interest and asks them to live with him and the dead girl forever. Yuko immediately refuses and tries to escape, but to no use. As Mami awakes, she witnesses Yamazaki forcing the hair into the remaining detective's face, thus killing him.
Mami warns him to stay away from Yuko and he reveals to her his hairy tongue, showing how he willingly let the hair take over him. Yuko pulls on his tongue and stretches it out a few metres before letting it shut back. He shouts in pain and knocks her down. As Yuko falls, she breaks some glass which she grabs and slices Yamazaki in the neck with. However, instead of blood, hair shoots out his neck and he is still alive. The attack enrages Yamazaki and he threatens to cut her hair. They then start a fight where Yuko repeatedly calls him a pervert and he tells her to shut up. In anger, he cuts a strand of Mami's hair which bleeds. Mami cries out in pain and falls to the floor, whilst Yamazaki examines in wonder at the hair, unaware that the dead girl has sat up.
Thinking that he is one of the kidnappers that killed her, the dead girl makes the hair grow out from Yamazaki's eyes, nails, ears and nose. Yuko takes the opportunity to grab Mami and run. The dead girl delays Yamazaki at first by grabbing him, but eventually lets go. Dead end, Yuko turns around as Yamazaki runs towards them. At the last second, the dead girl's eyes open and strands of hair shoots out in front of Yamazaki. He runs into it, resulting in decapitation and loss of his limbs. The grudge now gone, the hair reverts back into the dead girl, who lies as though sound asleep in the hammock, and Yuko collapses in exhuastion.
The movie ends with a shot of Yuko and Mami sitting on the beach, watching the sea. Yuko then asks Mami to stay with her forever, to which Mami agrees.
