From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

FORTUS is a brand of Stratasys Inc. manufacturer of additive fabrication systems. Formerly known as the FDM Group, FORTUS manufactures 3D production systems used for both direct digital manufacturing (also known as rapid manufacturing) and precision rapid prototyping. [1]

FORTUS systems employ the fused deposition modeling (FDM) process, which Stratasys patented. [2] FDM is used to produce three-dimensional parts directly from 3D CAD files, using industrial thermoplastic materials such ABS plastic, polycarbonate (PC), polyphenylsulfone (PPSF), and ULTEM 9085. [3]

Direct digital manufacturing is faster and cheaper than traditional rapid prototyping for producing short runs of parts or manufacturing tools that are used in the production of other goods. [4] It is estimated that between 2003 and 2008, the direct digital manufacturing market grew from about 4% to nearly 15% of the additive fabrication market. [5]

Stratasys Inc. introduced the FORTUS brand in 2009. FORTUS has locations in California, Michigan, Europe, Asia-Pacific and India, and its U.S. corporate headquarters are located in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.
