Fernando Alexis Nieve [ne-AY-vay] (born July 15, 1982 in Puerto Cabello, Venezuela) is a professional baseball pitcher. A right-handed pitcher, he currently plays for the New York Mets of Major League Baseball. His nickname is "The Snowman" due to the fact his last name Nieve means snow in Spanish. Nieve made his major league debut with the Houston Astros on April 4, 2006.
During most of his relief outings, Nieve will consistently hit 94-97 mph, although he claims that in earlier years he had been able to go as high as 99 mph. He had Tommy John surgery for elbow problems.
In March 2009, Nieve was claimed off waivers by the New York Mets and was called to the major league team in June when reliever J. J. Putz was placed on the disabled list.
