Australia playing Germany in the women's competition

Field Hockey at the 2004 Summer Olympics was held at the Olympic Hockey Centre located within the Helliniko Olympic Complex. The competitions for both men and women was split into two groups with the top two teams after the preliminary rounds progressing through to the semi-finals.

Men's competition

The men's event was contested by twelve teams with Sydney gold medallists Netherlands trying to make it a hat trick of Olympic titles:

Participating nations

Five nations automatically qualified for the 20th edition of the Men's Olympic Field Hockey Tournament:

  1.  Argentina (Winner of the 2003 Pan American Games)
  2.  Australia (Winner of the Oceania Cup)
  3.  Egypt (Winner of the 2003 All-Africa Games)
  4.  Germany (Winner of the 2003 Men's EuroHockey Nations Championship)
  5.  Korea (Winner of the 2002 Asian Games)

The seven remaining spots were taken by the first seven countries of the 2004 Olympic Qualifying Tournament, held in Madrid, Spain:

  1.  Netherlands
  2.  Spain
  3.  Pakistan
  4.  India
  5.  Great Britain
  6.  New Zealand
  7.  South Africa

Greece's plea rejected

On May 20, 2004 the International Hockey Federation (FIH) confirmed the participation of the South Africa's team in the Athens Olympics after the Court of Arbitration for Sport turned down Greece's appeal to be allowed a berth in the tournament as hosts. South Africa thus becomes the twelfth and final team to qualify for the mega event.

The FIH's decision came almost three months after the Hellenic Hockey Federation of Greece moved the CAS claiming a berth in the Olympics on grounds that they are the host country. The hosts had failed to win a berth in the mega event despite being given two chances by the FIH. The first option for Greece to gain a place at the Olympics was by qualifying for the 2003 EuroHockey Nations Championship, held in Barcelona. Greece did not qualify for this tournament, but there was a second opportunity, which required Greece to beat Canada, the lowest ranked in the Olympic qualifier, in a best of three play-off competition. Greece participated under protest, but lost the series 2–0.
