From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In baseball, a fireballer is a pitcher who throws at a notably high velocity. Generally, this term is reserved for pitchers with the ability to throw a fastball in excess of 95 miles per hour. Notable fireballers include Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax, Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Joel Zumaya, Jonathan Broxton, Jonathan Papelbon, Justin Verlander, Carlos Zambrano, Bobby Parnell, Matt Lindstrom, Daniel Bard, Bobby Jenks, and Rob Dibble.

One of the earliest fireballers was Cy Young, who recalled that he "tore the boards off the grandstand with my fast ball." Young is notable for holding the Major League Baseball record for wins with 511.
