The first-row transition metals are the period 4 elements in the d-block. These have atomic numbers from 21 to 30 and span from the group 3 until group 12 in the periodic table.

The reactivity and structural properties of first row transition metals and their compounds depend on the electronic configuration of the d electrons of the metal. Almost all of these 10 elements have biological roles in various organisms.
