Flórián Albert Sr. (born September 15, 1941 in Hercegszántó) is a retired Hungarian football striker, who was named European Footballer of the Year in 1967. He has been described as one of the most elegant footballers of all time.
Early life
The son of a blacksmith, Albert grew up in the little town of Hercegszántó near the border with the former Yugoslavia, where he got his first taste of the game playing with his two brothers. His mother was Hungarian Croat (from the group of Šokci [1]. She died when he was 2 [1]. When the family later moved to Budapes, he joined the country's most popular club Ferencváros. Albert was at the age of 11[1].
Career
Albert spent his club career with only one club: Ferencváros, where he played from 1952[1] to 1974. He made his debut with Ferencváros at the age of 16. Two games later, he received his call up from the Hungarian national team. He scored 32 goals in 75 caps for the Hungarian national team. He tied five others for as the top scorer at the 1962 World Cup, with four goals.
In 2007, Ferencváros's playground was named after him. Same year, he got award in his village of birth, Hercegszántó, becoming the Honourable Citizen[1].
His son Flórián Albert Jr. was also football player with Ferencváros and played for the Hungarian national team, as well.
