Extract of ipecac is prepared by soaking dried rhizomes and roots of the ipecac plant, Psychotria ipecacuanha, in an alcohol product for several weeks to produce a tincture.

Uses and Toxicology

Extract of ipecac is mixed with methylparaben, sugar syrup, and glycerin resulting in syrup of ipecac. This is used in many cases of poisoning attributed to plants poisonous foods or drugs. Syrups and extracts of ipecac are poisonous themselves.
