Flyff (short for Fly for Fun) is a fantasy MMORPG by Korean development company Aeonsoft. Flyff is a fairly typical party-oriented game where no character can do everything, and efficient play requires working in groups. Its main distinctiveness lies in its flying system; flying is the normal method of transportation for characters above beginning level.

Flyff is now hosted in 13 countries and 10 languages. It claims to have been played by over 6 million people.[1]

Development

In December 2002, Aeonsoft developed the first provisional prototype of the game, at the time called Clockworks Ltd. In September 2003 the company changed the name to Flyff and started the first closed beta in Korea. In July 2004, it won the Game of the Month award from the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Over the next year it was launched in three more countries: China, Taiwan, and Thailand. In November 2005, the US received the closed beta, which ran for a month before Flyff was commercially launched in December.[2]

Setting and Storyline

Roika is a fictional plain, once harmonious but plunged onto chaos by the offspring of the goddess Rhisis. Bent on the destruction of all life, Shade set the population adrift in the great sea and infected the land with Masquerpets (monsters) to complete her task. In an attempt to aid the humans her sister Bubble split the land into what is now called Madrigal. Exiled by eight Heroes in the Great War, Shade has now returned.[3]

Gameplay

Players control an avatar which spends most of its active time fighting and most of its inactive time running a shop. Characters choose character classes at level 15, and sub-classes at level 60. The game refers to these as the first and second job changes. The job changes are obligatory - when a character reaches the requisite level, experience gain stops until it completes one of the job quests. At level 120, the character may become a Master, returning to level 60 with enhanced powers, to work its way back up to level 121 and become a Hero.

Levels are gained based on experience, which is acquired primarily by killing and secondarily by performing quests. Quests mostly involve killing specific Masquerpets and collecting quest objects they drop. Each type drops a different type of quest object. A typical early quest is the one called "Party of Is," which requires one to kill Pukepukes, collecting 7 Chupims.[4]

At each level, the character receives skill points, which may be invested in skills available to its job(s). There are two types of skills, those used for attacking and those used for protection and/or enhancement. Some skills have a cool-down time. Some skills can cause status effects, confusion, stun, and bleed being the most common. Skills must be chosen carefully, as it's not possible to acquire maximum levels in all skills available until level 60 Master.[5]

The other source of character improvement is acquiring objects - particularly improved equipment. Masquerpets drop money (called penya in game), equipment, and consumable items (food, potions) as well as quest objects. These can all be traded, and gameplay involves a lot of buying and selling to collect desired equipment. Most equipment has a minimum level at which it can be used, so characters below Master level are likely to replace their equipment regularly.

Classes

At level 15 the user may choose from 4 jobs, each offering a different gaming experience. At level 60 each class splits into 2 complementary classes. When the user hits level 120 s/he may choose to go for the Master class. For this, the user’s level is reset to 60 and s/he will need to re-level to 120. The Heroes of Madrigal are the highest level, 121. To become a Hero, the user must complete a quest demanding the collection of rare items.

The classes to choose from.
  • The Mercenary is the tank of FlyFF. They are an "Up in your face" fighter and the warrior class of Flyff. They use swords and axes. This class subdivides into:
  • Blade, class of the hero Heren. Capable of dual-wielding swords and axes, this class is one of the best damage dealers in the game.
  • Knight, class of the hero Billeien. Receiving the most health per stamina points in the game and dealing lots of damage with their axes, Knights are the best tanks.
  • The Magician is for those who wish to advance using their will and master all the spells at their disposal. Very dependent on mana, this class can be expensive to play. Is one of the best damage dealers in the game. This class subdivides into:
  • Elementor, class of the hero Lillip. The Elementor has a wide variety of devastating elemental spells.
  • Psykeeper, class of the hero Offerep. Mental and demonic forces fuel the skills of this subclass.
  • The Assist is the Medic or Priest class of Flyff. They have an array of buffs to enhance the user's stats. They also can fight using blunt melee weapons called Knuckles. This class can be played as support or as a fighter. This class subdivides into:
  • Billposter, class of the hero Roentel. Between their proficiency in hand-to-hand combat and their Assist buffs, this is the most self-sufficient class in the game.
  • Ringmaster, class of the hero Eiene. This is an elite support class whose presence is often necessary during gameplay.
  • The Acrobat is a ranged fighter/rogue class and has a wide array of skills geared towards stealthy and cunning maneuvers. They are proficient in the use of yo-yos and bows. This class subdivides into:
  • Ranger, class of the hero Hainan. Extreme speed and the capacity of invisibility make this class deadly stealth attackers.
  • Jester, class of the hero Curenen. Masters of trickery, these fighters will use dark magic, poison, and even blood leaching to best their enemies.

Combat

Combat in Flyff comes in two styles, melee and ranged. Skills are available to all classes with different skills being available to different classes. All combatants are dependent on potions. Health, fight power, and magic power bars are replenishable through food, vital drinks, and mana refreshers.

PvP

Player versus player (PvP) fighting is allowed on all servers without penalty in the form of dueling. Both players must confirm first, except in the PvP Arena, a free-for-all environment found on all servers.[6] However, player killing is allowed on the Demian server only and comes with a high penalty.

Social Systems

Lord System

Introduced in version 12, the Lord system allows eligible[7] players to be voted as the Lord of their server for 2 weeks. While a Lord, a player may introduce a number of events on the server. Also, players are now taxed anywhere from 0 to 20% on all NPC purchases and returns and a portion of all taxes are given to the Lord. The other portion is given to the winning Tower Siege guild. [7] To qualify as a candidate to become a Lord, players must have obtained Hero or Master status. 10% of the eligible voting public must participate in the vote for a Lord to be chosen. To vote for a candidate, a player must be at least level 60 and must have logged in to the game within the last 30 days. Each player may only vote for one candidate.

Party System

The party system encourages cooperative gameplay by increasing experience and booty for those who are in a party. A lone player does not benefit from or harm a party. A party starts as a Regular Party, where experience is on Level and distributed evenly to party members found in the same location. At level 10 the party is changed to Advanced. Now the party experience can be changed to Contribution and will be distributed by the amount of damage done. Originally intended to hold one of each 2nd job class, an Advanced Party may have 8 players.

Guild System

Flyff is a community-based MMORPG, and guilds are an important feature. Within a guild players may use guild chat. Guilds are a good way of socializing on Flyff. Many in-game activities are guild-based. Guilds have a chain of command: the Master/Leader, Kingpins, Captains, Supporters, and Rookies. Guilds may choose an emblem and cloak to represent themselves and they have the use of a warehouse. A large amount of the end-game content is guild-related.

Guild Siege

This is a weekly event, held on Saturday in channel 1 of each server, which tests the mettle of each guild competing. It is a "free-for-all" environment. A total of 8 Guilds may enter. Each Guild may have 10 players. To compete the Guild leader must place a bid with the NPC Frankie. The 8 highest bidders compete.

Clockworks War

This is a guild dungeon that any level guild may enter. Each guild may do it only once, so many players form a new guild to do the Clockworks War then disband. If the user fails, he may redo until he completes.

Secret Rooms & Forsaken Tower

This guild event was introduced in the version 12 update.[7] To start with, a guild master of a level 60+ guild must select a side, East or West, which offer different rewards.[7] Once a guild has entered, they are faced with hundreds of monsters that are all in their giant form. If they succeed in defeating this room, they can attempt to defeat the center room for their side. If the center room is conquered, they must then fight Asmodan, a boss with 150 million HP whom they must defeat to claim their side's reward.

Couple System

The couple system is a marriage-style connection between a male and a female character that was implemented in Version 13[8] to encourage cooperative gameplay. Two characters forming a couple are granted special buffs and with each new couple level gained, they receive gifts.[8]

Other Game Systems

Events

Events involving rare drops and extra experience are held almost every week by the GM team. Maintenance is held every Tuesday evening, keeping the game fresh.

Collector System

Introduced in version 11, the Collector System[6] gives the user something new to do. With the use of a Collector the player can collect rare and unique game items. From Suit Socket Cards to flying clouds, collecting can be a lucrative pastime.

Private Shops

The player shop is a good way to make some extra cash. The shop holds 20 items and has a chat interface as well as an information interface, providing the seller information on players who have connected to their shop, disconnected from their shop. When there are too many shops in one place it can cause lag and make the game crash.(though this rarely happens)

Raising Pets

Introduced in version 11, the Raised Pet system has come to be important to the game. There are seven types of Raised Pets, which start out as eggs and can be dropped by any Masquerpet level 20 and above. If left in the egg stage, the pet will fail to evolve or die. To evolve a pet one needs to complete the quest given by the NPC Pet Tamer. The pets must also be fed to keep them alive. Each Raised Pet has five levels and three appearances. A player accompanied by a pet receives some kind of advantage, different for each type of pet.

Elements

Monsters are each associated with a particular one of the five in-game elements. Each element is most vulnerable to one other element, and least vulnerable to another. Weapons and armor can be "elemented" conferring advantages vs monsters of some types and disadvantages vs others. Many aggressive spells are also elemented.

Cash Shop

The micropayment system is used in Flyff. This game is free to play for life. Users wishing to support the game can do so by purchasing gPotatos. These gPotatos can then be exchanged for premium items not found in the game, including clothing, potions, and pick-up pets.

Technical Development

Graphics & Sound

There are many music tracks in Flyff. Each continent has its own music. Some tracks are peppy and others somber, depending on the atmosphere of the terrain. The sound effects are typical for an MMO.

The original sound track was created by ESTi from soundTeMP.

Game Mechanics

Aeonsoft employs its own in-house core technology. The world object engine uses load balancing middle-ware, multi-thread and parallel game logic processing. The 3D flying engine uses faster process with vector and collide mesh and 3D space divided by Octree System. Its network sync engine utilities packet optimization by object move estimation, client-side sync calculation, and object move calibration processes.[9]

Version Updates

Unlike console games, most Online Video Games are in constant flux, introducing new content in the form of version updates.

In February 2007, a significant change was made to the skill system. This new system was not well received by the public. Also in that update, Ivilis Temple was implemented for levels 40~75. In September 2007 the Pet System was added. The user interface was redesigned and the upgrade system was tweaked. The last big change of 2007 was in December, focusing on the end game and players who had reached level 120. The Hero and Master classes were released and Volkane Dungeon for levels 110-plus.

In February 2008 The Awakening was introduced and the Collector System was added.[6] Gone since February 2007, the PvP arena was re-added. Also introduced was the premium area Azria, with monsters level 73-115. A large update in October 2008 added the Lord system, a dungeon called The Forsaken Tower with its Secret Rooms, and Rangda the roaming giant.[7]

Eight months later, in June 2009, Take back the Skies was released. The Rainbow Race, where players must race from place to place to complete seven mini-games in random order, was one of the main attributes of this update. This chapter also brought the user a premium area called Coral Island. Towards the end of that year, in November, version 14 was released. This update brought with it new territories to the north. New quests for the mid level rang and for the high levels also. All new instance dungeons, safe upgrading options and transportation devices "full size Wings" were also introduced. [10]

Classes

There are 13 classes in Flyff.

Every player begins Flyff as a Vagrant and you must choose a class at level 15 by completing certain quests (you are forced to choose a class since you will gain no exp until you do). Talking to the NPC Juria in the town of Flaris, you are asked which class you would like to be and are sent on the appropriate quest. The four classes you are able to choose are Assist, Magician, (Acrobat- only in some country servers) or Mercenary.

At level 60 you are able to choose between two more classes to become. These two are dependant on what classes you chose at level 15. A player of the Assist class can become a Billposter or Ringmaster, the Magician class can become a Elementer or Psykeeper, and the Mercenary becomes a Blade or a Knight. Classes are in a three tier system.

On December 24, 2005 a new class was implemented, the Acrobat class, along with many other new additions like a PK server. The Acrobat can become, at level 60, either a Jester or a Ranger. The Acrobat class will be a mid-range to long-range class that uses a yo-yo or a bow. The bow users are heavily dependent on DEX while yo-yo users are dependent on a mix of STR and DEX.

Cash Shop

As all versions of Flyff are free-to-play, revenue is generated from a Cash Shop where players may use real money to buy items that alter an in-game character in some way. There are items available purely for appearance, such as clothing, as well as items that serve a gameplay function, such as items which increase a stat value for a small amount of time. These Cash Shop items have a finite duration, and can be exchanged among players for in-game currency.

As of August 2006, a week after the Version 1.6 update, non-combat pets were introduced to the Cash Shop. These pets are baby versions of some in-game monsters. They simply follow the user and pick up items dropped on the ground. (Pets are only available during special periods of time, where users are given the ability to purchase them, for a week.)

Free Cash Shop items are given to new players who complete the first job change after reaching level 15. The reason for this decision is unknown, but select items that would normally be from the Cash Shop, such as Scrolls of Activation, are now given to everyone at level 15, upon completion of their first job change quest. The items are chosen to reflect the common role of the job. For example, a Magician would get a RefresherHold to keep its mana at full for a set amount of time. In the Version 7 update of International Flyff, a Reskill, an item for resetting characters' skills allocation is also included. However, this Reskill item is not exchangeable in-game.

Gameplay

In the game you can complete quests, fight spawning monsters, support other players, or create your own shop.

Quests are gained by talking to various NPCs. The quests are either kill X amount of creatures or take this item to another NPC (a.k.a. fetch quest). Quests are sometimes in groups like killing monsters and delivering an item, these are usually important quests like class selecting and the flying quest.

Fighting monsters is just done by simply double clicking or hitting ctrl + left click on them. You character will begin to smack them into oblivion. Attack skills and spells must be used by hitting a hotkey or using them in a combo in your Action Slot, your character will not use skills automatically. If you ever fight a creature five levels above yours all your damage will be cut in half, if you fight a creature five levels below yours they will give no exp and will drop no loot. Quests and fighting is not instanced, so attacking creatures is a first come, first serve basis. Once attacking, no one can attack that creature unless you die or run away. Loot dropped is also protected for a short time and the only person who got the kill (or the party) may pick them up.

Supporting is another great way to play Flyff. The Assist class is very adept at supporting other players with healing and other benefits called buffs. To get anywhere you must join a party, a lot of time spent playing this way is through making sure your party is healed and in good fighting shape.

You can create your own user shop to sell to other players too. Items can also be sold to NPCs, but the most money can be made by selling to other players. By making a user shop you can set the items you are selling and their prices. The game must be running to keep the shop open and due to the fact that you can't alt-tab out of the game (see: Criticisms), selling can be a a slight, but beneficial, pain.

Skills

Skills are dependent on player level, class, and sometimes the level of other skills. The skill tree is opened by hitting the K key on the keyboard. Skill can be added to the Action Slot and then used by hitting the C key. Their are only five places for skills in the Action Slot and the skills are used in the order that they are from left to right.

Skills either cost FP (Physical skills) or MP (Mental Skills). FP and MP recover over time, faster when resting, and can also be replenished with items. To gain back FP you will use the Vita item (VitaDrink, VitaPotion, etc.), to gain back MP you use refreshers or various grades (first to sixth refresher).

Equipment/Items

Equipment is player level and class specific. Weapons are either one hand or two handed, those one handed weapons can also be used with a shield. Skills that use MP can only be used while equipped with the appropriate two handed weapon. This makes classes like the Assist and Magician choose between better defense or ability to use certain skills.

Items are within certain groups, having either different grades or slight different uses.

  • Food - Restores HP
  • Vita drinks - Restores FP
  • Refreshers - Restores MP
  • Monster drops - for quests or extra money (money in game is called penya)
  • Blinkwings - One use teleport items

Flying

The flying aspect in Flyff is an interesting one. To be able to fly you must be be level 20. There is a flying quest but the player is not required to complete this quest to fly.

Flying gives many benefits like faster traveling, the ability to run from monsters, and looking cool. There are two items that allow flight, a broom and a hover board. There are also three types of each, board or broom, each type costs more but has a higher top speeds.

There is also an item called AccelorFuel that gives your board/broom a turbo boost for about 13 seconds.

Criticisms

Flyff has a few problems. One of the less annoying problems is the Engrish. This can be overcome with a little laughter at someone else's expense. The biggest issues are the incomplete menus, blank menu descriptions, and lag in towns with many user-owned shops.

With recent updates, though, Flyff's grammar problems has become less frequent and there is less lag. One of the major problems though is server crashes, which will result in a roll-back (as if the game were taken back in time), though this mostly happens when all the servers are full and there is too much action going on at once.
