From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fort Ord Dunes State Park is a 979-acre state park on Monterey Bay, California, in the United States. It is currently undergoing restoration, and has been off-limits to the public.[1] It is slated to open to the public on March 3, 2009.[2]

The state park includes a boardwalk, a path to the beach, a four-mile road for walking and biking, and interpretive exhibits describing its former use as a military training area. As the dunes are a nesting area for sensitive species, public access is limited to the paths and trails.

The area was once part of the Fort Ord military installation and held 15 rifle ranges.[3]

Fort Ord Dunes State Park was one of the 48 California state parks proposed for closure in January 2008 by California's Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as part of a deficit reduction program.[4]

Final property transfer of the park from Fort Ord to the California State Government took place in December, 2008.[5]
