Etymology

From Middle High German vrouwe, vrowe, from the Old High German frouwa, from Germanic *fraw-, a feminine form of *frauja- (Old English frēa, frēo), from Proto-Indo-European *prōw- (master, judge). Cognate with Old Saxon frūa, Old Norse freyja, French bru (daughter-in-law), Gothic 𐌱𐍂𐌿𐌸𐍃 (bruethas), lady). The IE root is also the source of Slavic *prāvъ (Old Church Slavonic правъ, Russian правый (right)), and the first element of Latin provincia.
