From the people who brought you Hitman 2 comes the critically acclaimed Freedom Fighters, a third-person shooter with easy to learn and light squad commanding elements. The game takes place in an alternate near-future. The cold war never ended, the Soviets spread their communism all around the world, and the United States is one of the few remaining countries resisting them. Players pick up just as they invade New York.
A sequel for the game was announced, but is now up in the air if it will ever be made. Reason for this may be the fact that Freedom Fighters sold poorly on all consoles, despite good reviews.

The gameplay is easy and light, compared to the tactics in other squad based shooters like Rainbow Six 3. The game uses the standard dual-stick controls for movement that most FPS games on consoles employ. Shooting is basically auto-targetted. If you direct the camera to face the enemy, you'll hit them. The controls are just as easy. Besides your basic shoot & jump buttons, you'll have a button for zooming in on your weapon (Somewhat like a scope, you'll be in a stationary position but can aim for something specific) you'll have your squad command buttons. One button to send your men ahead, another button to call them to your position, and one last button to make them defend an area. Holding any of these buttons will give the command to ALL of your men. Tapping them once will make one man follow these commands. You can't decide which soldier will take what command, but it hardly matters anyway. You can use the scope button to make them go to/defend a specific area that you are not standing on.
The amount of men you have in your squad (Up to 12 by the end of the game) depends on your charisma level. Your charisma level depends on what heroic acts you accomplish. These heroic acts are either accomplishing objectives (There are some optional objectives that you can skip if you're good) or healing injured civilians that you find. These civilians can be hard to find, or you may decide to conserve health kits for you & your team.
You will often find yourself engaged in gunfights in destroyed urban environments. Your men will take cover with whatever is necessary and peek out to shoot every once in a while. You will often find yourself using them to lay down cover fire or act as distractions. Most of the effective ways to get past various guarded blockades of Soviet soldiers revolves around finding hidden passages through/around buildings that will allow you to flank them. These spots can be hidden sniper nests, or alleys between two burned out buildings.
The Soviet Union developed the Atomic bomb first, and brought the end to World War II. World power leans in their favor. Slowly and steadily, they have spread their power to other countries. Recently, the communist party has won the presidential election in Mexico, unsettlingly close to home. As Christopher & Troy head to Isabella Angelina's apartment to work on her toilet, the Soviets attack. They've raided her apartment and taken her prisoner for her anti-communist activism. They also take Troy when they find him, but Christopher manages to hide.
Chris quickly uses his wrench to take out an officer, saving a man named Mr. Jones. Mr. Jones leads him to a rebel base, where he is asked to save Isabella. After saving her, you are given control of a squad and go to work hitting various Soviet controlled buildings. Chris leads men to blow up helicopter fields, free prisoners, liberate power plants, and more. With each success, the news takes greater notice of him, dubbing him The Freedom Phantom and reporting his acts as terrorism.
After a few missions and resounding success, Troy leaves to create new pockets of resistance in other cities hit by the Soviet attack. However, this doesn't last long as he is caught by the Soviets and interrogated when they find out he is The Freedom Phantom's brother. After disobeying their orders to give a speech asking his brother & the resistance to give up, Troy is executed. Mr. Jones convinces Chris to take revenge on the Soviets by assassinating General Tatarin. Chris goes alone to be as stealthy as possible, and succeeds in sniping Tatarin. However, when he gets back to the sewer base, he finds that it has been raided & abandoned.
Mr. Jones turns out to be have been a Soviet general all along. After fighting his way out, Chris meets up with a couple of characters, Freedom Fighters who managed to escape Jones. The rest have been captured, including Isabella. They take refuge in a subway tunnel and launch more attacks on the Soviets, until they have enough resources & manpower to go straight to Governors Island. Jones takes over for Tatarin as the leader of the Soviet Army.
Governor's Island is where Isabella is being held and is heavily guarded by the remainder of their forces. After a disasterous landing on the island that causes heavy casualties and heavy losses of supplies, the Freedom Fighters take refuge once again underground. Slowly, they restock on important items such as C4 to open up a sewer pipe from the island to the mainland. After disabling the Soviet defense of their main base piece by piece (Destroying helipad fueling stations, hitting mortars, etc), they take the base and save Isabella. They celebrate, despite knowing that the war is not over. More Soviet forces from the mainland are inevitably on their way, and Chris knows they will have to keep fighting.
