When a series of suicides start happening in Grovetown, the townspeople turn a blind eye and cling to their beliefs. Lindsay (Elizabeth Rice) is a student who instead investigates the mystery of the suicides and befriends Aidan (Thomas Dekker), a nonbeliever. Lindsay discovers that something evil is behind the suicides and that she is next to die.
A young girl, Natalie is sat with her boyfriend Shaun as he reads from a mysterious black book. When he finished he kisses Natalie passionately, she thinks he's wanting to go all the way until he pulls out a gun and commits suicide. Back in the main town, Lindsay is shopping with her mother, Tish who wants her to dress more appropriately for church. As their talking Natalie bursts into her fathers shop, covered in blood and mumbling about a girl following her. Her father takes her into the back room, where Lindsay fins her holding the black book. Natalie asks Lindsay to tell her father to look out for the girl, as she leaves the doors lock behind her and Lindsay screams in terror as smashing can be heard from within. When they finally knock the door through they find Natalie dying, a pair of scissors lodged into her neck. A series of suicides start from here, next is Natalie's father who hangs himself in the same room she died in, he was found by his niece Molly. Back at school Lindsay's boyfriend, Dylan a son of a pastor and a strong believer in Christ starts attacking another student, Aiden, whom he blames his family for the deaths. Lindsay helps Aiden with his minor wounds but gets nicknamed 'witches bitch' by the other students. Soon, Molly starts seeing the ghostly girl, but it's herself, Molly dies by slitting her wrist on a broken door window. Her body is never found, but Lindsay's best friend, Claire drives past her body. Later that day Lindsay goes back to Aiden's to warn him about the revolting students prepared to kill him, this is when she meets his cousin, Sadie who had travelled down from New York for Shaun's funeral. Lindsay warns Aiden, but her words fall on deaf ears, Aiden takes Lindsay to a stream running underneath a bridge, this is where she finds out that his mother practiced witchcraft, he tells her to get away from Grovetown, she leaves feeling frightened but returns to attend Shauns funeral. Claire dies during this time when her car explodes outside of Lindsay's house, where Tish watches with horror. Lindsay arrives home that night and is abducted by Dylan and Roy, Tish's lover. They all travel to the church to be purified as they start to believe they are cursed because they witnessed Natalie's death, but that night Tish commits suicide by drinking bleach, Lindsay finds her and instantly knows she's next. She rushes to Aiden babbling about a ghost following her. Aiden and Sadie don't seem phased by the deaths, Aiden helps her by rubbing some oil onto her skin, telling her to imagine the oil to be like a thin layer of armour, which will protect her until they can stop the spell, for which they need the black book. Lindsay and Aiden break into the Church, the ghost is still after Lindsay, but they grab the book and leave. Dylan, Roy, Pastor Joe and Paul, another strong believer in Christ know that Aiden stole the book.
As their leaving, planning on killing Aiden and Lindsay, Pastor Joe admits to his son that it wasn't Aiden's mother who killed an old friend, which had first started the rumours that Aiden's family were devil worshippers, it lead to Aiden's mother's death. Pastor Joe reveals that he killed his old friend and dumped him in a river. Dylan leaves, saying that the conversation stays between them. Back at Aiden's home Sadie pulls a gun on the duo, she wants the book and explains that Shaun had to kill himself in order for the curse to start, but it was Aiden who wanted everyone in town dead. Shocked, Lindsay refuses to go with him, but Aiden says that if Sadie destroys the book, she'll die. They get the book back, just as Paul, Roy and Dylan burst into the home, unannounced. Aiden and Lindsay take to the woods, Dylan and Paul following as Roy watches Sadie. Whilst running, Aiden and Lindsay split, intending to meet up at the pier, back at the home Roy tapes Sadie's mouth shut as he tells her how he became a religious man, he was visited by god who wanted him to become one of his soldiers, Roy covers Sadie with gasoline and sets her alight, claiming that he is doing God's will.
In the woods, Lindasay makes it to the pier, but the ghost is hot on her tail. She stops at the edge of the platform and starts reciting a prayer, when she falls into the water. Meanwhile, Dylan shoots at Aiden and believes that he misses, so he storms in that direction trying to find him. He continues searching when he is hit from behind, Aiden puts Sadie's gun to his head before saying 'Thy pain is thy cleansing' as Lindsay screams for him. Lindsay panics in the water as her dobbleganger emerges from the water behind her. Lindsay quickly climbs out of the water alive, then blood drips onto her back, the ghost's eye is bleeding as Lindsay sits up. The ghost grabs the rope and hands it to Lindsay, who starts to wrap it around her own neck, the ghosts hands moving in the same motion as hers before tightening it and making Lindsay strangle herself. Aiden rushes to her and stops her, they continue with disspelling the curse, he merges his own blood with Shauns on the book, when he says to Lindsay that a sacrifice started the curse so a sacrifice must end it. Aiden passionately kisses her and tells her to burn the book, before shooting himself.
Dylan and Paul then show up, Dylan believing Lindsay to be a devil worshipper he pulls his gun on her. Lindsay stands, Sadie's gun in her hands as she begs Dylan to walk away, as he's about to shoot Lindsay gets him first in the chest. Paul quickly runs off. Not long after the cops arrive, but they find that Aiden hadn't committed suicide, Dylan had shot him in the chest earlier. In the woods, Lindsay tries to burn the book, but to no avail as the curse is still around, the ghost creates a gust of wind blowing the fire out before claiming Lindsay. As the credits roll, small scenes of other suicides including; a police officer who shot his own head, Roy who electrocuted himself in the bath, the janitor from the high school surround in blood and a young girl motionless in a park. The curse is still at large.
In July 2007, director Phedon Papamichael was hired to direct From Within, a thriller based on a script by Brad Keene. The film is financed through a European equity fund. Production began in July-August 2007 in Maryland.[3] The writer described the film, "I wanted to write something that was scary and high concept and dealt with personal issues, namely religious beliefs and how they play a part in who we are and the way we lead our lives."[4] Papamichael desired to make From Within in the tradition of The Shining (1980) and Rosemary's Baby (1968). For From Within, filming took place in Perry Point, Maryland, a defunct estate with homes that would be torn down after the completion of production.[1] The film entered post-production in August 2007.[5]
Filmmakers originally planned to finish production in time to release the film for the Sundance Film Festival in February 2008,[1] but not being complete in time, From Within ultimately had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival that runs between April and May 2008.[6] The film entered the festival "riding a considerable wave of buzz and expectation".[7][8] From Within later won awards at the Solstice Film Festival in June 2008, for Best Feature Film, Best Original Score, Best Actor (Thomas Dekker) and Best Actress (Elizabeth Rice).[9] It was chosen for the Official Selection at the London FrightFest Film Festival and the Fantasia Festival in Montreal.
The film was released on January 9, 2009 as part of the third After Dark Films 8 Films to Die For series.
