Location of Gandesa

Gandesa is the capital of the comarca of Terra Alta, in the province of Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. Gandesa is 363 metres above sea level. Its population in 2006 was 3,090.

Gandesa was at the centre of fighting in the Summer of 1938, when Republican forces crossed the Ebro in an attempt to throw back the Nationalist armies of General Franco. This is mentioned in the ballac "Jamie Foyers".

On December 23, 1948 an Iberia Airlines Douglas DC-3 crashed in bad weather near Gandesa killing all 27 occupants.
