Eminent nationalist, freedom fighter and litterateur Ganga Sharan Singh (Sinha) (1905-1988) was a member of the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament for three terms ( 1956-62 and 1962-68 from Bihar and then nominated member in 1968-1974)..[1] He was among the prominent leaders of the Indian National Congress Party as among the founders of the Congress Socialist Party.[2] He was close to Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India's first President, who wanted him to be one of the trustees for the properties of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy at Patna for social service.[3] He shared the same house at kadam kuan in Patna with his close friend and nationalist Jayaprakash Narayan.[4] Jayaprakash Narayan shared the most cordial, lasting and harmonious friendship with him.[5]
He worked relentlessly for the promotion of Hindi as a National Language. He was among the founding members of the Board of trustees of Bharatiya Jnanpith.[6] The Kedriya Hindi Sansthan, Agra has instituted an award in his honour. This year (2008), the Ganga Sharan Singh Award by Kedriya Hindi Sansthan, Agra went to professor Zohra Afzal for her contributions to Hindi language.[7] The Government of India has instituted Ganga Sharan Singh Awards under Hindi Sevi Samman Awards.[8] For 2001, the Ganga Sharan Singh Awards for the propagation and training of Hindi were bagged by Shri P.Narayan, Shri Boyapati Nageshwar Rao, Shri S. Neelveer Sharma Shastri and Prof. Peetambar Chimanrao Sarode.[9] The government of Bihar has instituted an award for literature in his name.
The Government of India had accepted the recommendations of the Ganga Sharan Sinha Committee Report on child education in 1969 and decided to integrate all services for the 0-6 years olds, planning proceeded cautiously, piloted at first, with the ICDS conceptual model.[10]
