Nearby within the commune of the town is an archeological site of a Roman villa from the republican era. The villa "Rossilli" is believed to be a country home of the Julii family. The name of the town is believed to be derived from the Roman consul and general Aulus Gabinius a friend of the famous general Pompey and ally of Gaius Julius Caesar. Cicero, the famous Roman senator and orator outlined in a number of letters to his brother Quintus the development and outcome of Gabinius's trials, for which he was acquitted.
