History

The university started when Prof. Dr. Michael Jansen, archaeologist and architect at RWTH Aachen University, was asked to plan and establish an archaeological park in Al Balid in Salalah (Dhofar region, Oman). In a Five-Year-Plan, Prof. Dr. Jansen and other experts from Germany, Oman and other countries participated in the Al Balid project.

In addition to the Al Balid project, a Memorandum of understanding was signed in 2000 between Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, RWTH Aachen University and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). In 2005, an agreement between the Ministry of Higher Education and DAAD was signed to send Omani students to Germany for studies. Four Bachelor programmes were approved by the Ministry of Higher Education in April 2007. In October 2007, the first batch of 60 students started their Pre-University Study Programme of which 45 enrolled into the Foundation Year.

Academic Programmes

GUtech offers four full-time Bachelor of Science (BSc) study-programmes (8 semesters):

  • Applied Geosciences,
  • Information Technology for Engineering and Management,
  • Urban Planning and Architectural Design and
  • Sustainable Tourism and Regional Development.

Applied Geosciences is based on exploration of the earth and how to search for resources such as gas, oil and water. Studying Geosciences requires from the students knowledge of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Many geoscientists in the Gulf region work for oil companies, water management companies, government institutions or as consultants.

Information Technology for Engineering and Management focuses on qualifying graduates to work in different fields such as banking, tourism, logistics, airport management and others. System analysis, system development and design of software will be some of the choices of career paths of BSc students in Applied Information Technology.

Urban Planning and Architecture teaches the students how to structure and design a city while respecting the natural environment and local traditions. Urban planners can choose careers in the government, private project development companies, international organisations, housing construction, and consultancies or work within a team of architects. Within a short time GUtech will add additional Bachelor of Science Programmes in Engineering as well as Masters and PhD courses to the curriculum. Besides, GUtech is in the process to build a larger campus in the capital area. That campus will include a research center, residential buildings, staff and students accommodation as well as sports facilities.

Sustainable Tourism and Regional Development students learn how to develop a whole region economically and most of all sustainable. Possible career paths are in the management of tourism promotion and development, in the marketing of cities and regions, planning and assessment of infrastructure development as well as the implementation and management of national parks.
