Glenn Quagmire is a fictional character on the animated series Family Guy, best known for his hypersexuality.[2] Creator and voice actor Seth MacFarlane describes Quagmire as "an appalling human being who is still caught in the rat-pack era" based on anachronistic 1950s party-animal clichés.[3] His neighbor and friend Peter Griffin describes him as a "heartless sex hound."[4]

Sexual behavior

Many of the storylines, and most of the jokes, about Quagmire feature his wanton and deviant sexual behavior.[5][6] He's known for extremely predatory behavior, such as drugging the drinks of his dates.[7][8] Quagmire is a registered sex offender,[9] and has a foot fetish.[10][11] He's performed a seemingly endless chain of bizarre sexual acts, such as picking up illegal aliens at Home Depot and Jo-Ann Fabrics stores to suffocate him while he masturbated, and "giving a reach around to a spider monkey while reciting the Pledge of Allegiance."[12]

Aside from these excesses, Quagmire finds sexual arousal in seemingly banal situations, and sexual innuendo in much of the show's dialogue.[13] During such periods of sexual arousal, he invokes several catchphrases, including "giggity giggity goo" (sometimes shortened to simply "giggity", or slowed down, replacing "goo" with "gi-ggi-ty").[14]

Origins and appearance

The name Quagmire was chosen by a college acquaintance of MacFarlane's;[3] the word quagmire refers to both a soft soil that yields easily (such as quicksand), and a situation that is difficult to get out of. The title of the infidelity-themed episode "The Cleveland–Loretta Quagmire" plays on the second meaning. MacFarlane came up with Quagmire's voice after listening to fast-talking radio jockeys from the 1950s era, describing the character as a "50s radio guy on coke."[3] The "giggity" phrase was inspired by Steve Marmel's Jerry Lewis impression.[14] Quagmire's home follows the same retro theme, decked out in a style reminiscent of the swinging party set of the 1950s and '60s; nearly every part of the house has a discreetly hidden bed.[15]

In his early appearances, Quagmire was less of the sexual-obsessed pervert he later became and more of a displaced hipster. In a DVD bonus feature, Seth MacFarlane singled out a line in the season two episode "Love Thy Trophy", in which Quagmire answers a one-night stand's question about his job with the words "I have a question for you, too. Why are you still here?" as the moment where the character's over-sexed personality was crystallized.[16]

Personality and relationships

Quagmire is a widower, briefly married to Joan.[11] From another relationship he has fathered a girl, named Anna Lee, who he gives up for adoption.[17] Quagmire was once in a relationship with Cheryl Tiegs and considers her "the one that got away."[18]

Despite his hypersexuality, Quagmire is not without humanity; he does improv comedy,[19] volunteers at a soup kitchen, is protective of his deaf brother, and is helping his sister through an abusive relationship. He is also often seen as fairly good with children. He thus despises Peter's dog, Brian, viewing him as narcissistic and "a big, sad, alcoholic bore."[18]

Job

While seldom depicted at work,[20] Quagmire is an airline pilot for TransNational Airlines who uses his position to get Lois a job as a flight attendant.[21] He is a veteran of the United States Navy, and first met Peter by saving him from drowning, although in later episodes he is shown as having known Peter and Lois since high school.[22]
