From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Granite Gear Backpacks is a producer of backpacks and is located in Two Harbors, Minnesota known for its construction techniques and backpack durability. The most notable piece of technology used in many of their backpacks is a molded, 3-dimensional frameplate. Released in 1996, it is made of composite carbon fiber and plastics and is designed to support the actual ruck of the backpack without other frame stays [1]. Reviews from magazines like Backpacker Magazine[1][2] and Outside[3][4] have praised their durable construction and versatile compression system.

Since its beginning, Granite Gear has provided sponsorship aid and supply to packers and testers undertaking high-adventure endeavors. Most recently they have released the backpack designed for ultrahiker Justin "Trauma" Lichter, who logged more than 10,000 miles of hiking between November 2005 and 2006. The three other groups sponsored currently are "Greg and Deia", a pair hiking the Andes Mountain range, Chris "Rafiki" Hansen who will through-hike the AT this year, and a pair named Pamela and Geoff, who are crossing Canada in a canoe.[5]
