Green Gartside (born Paul Julian Strohmeyer, 22 June 1955, Cardiff, Wales, UK), is the primary force behind Scritti Politti, a band best known for their work in the 1980s (especially the 1985 chart success Cupid & Psyche '85), but who have recently enjoyed a renaissance through the 2006 released album, White Bread, Black Beer.
Gartside is regarded as being an intellectual pop songwriter with interests ranging from philosophy (deconstruction and Marxism) to hip hop. He has worked with Miles Davis, Chaka Khan, Eurythmics, Elvis Costello, Shabba Ranks and Kylie Minogue among others.
Green Gartside was born Paul Julian Strohmeyer (Strohmeyer being a last name with origins in the Hessen region of Germany[1]) in the 22nd of June, 1955. His father died sometime in his childhood, after which his widowed mother married a solicitor from Newport, Wales named Gordon Gartside, from which Green adopted his new last name. (He later became inspired to add on the "Green" via a train journey he took back to Wales.)[2]
Green attended Croesyceiliog Grammar School in Cwmbran and studied foundation art at what is now know as the Newport School of Art, Media and Design.[3]
