The Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia CD-ROM first appeared in 1992.[citation needed]
Grolier published the 1985 CD-ROM The New Grolier Electronic Encyclopedia, based on the American Academic Encyclopedia, which comprised 30,000 entries and 9 million words.[1]
The 21 volume Academic American Encyclopedia (1980) was the first print encyclopedia to be published electronically, in 1985.
Over time, pictures, maps, sound files, video files, interactive features and Internet links were added to Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia. Updated quarterly, the multimedia compact disc increasingly diverged from the print set and eventually became a completely independent product.
The 2003 Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia is the latest and perhaps final edition available on CD.
