The island is mainly accessed through the Nansha Port Expressway from the city, which links the island to Haizhu District to the north and Panyu District to the south. A temporary bridge connects the island to the southeast part of Haizhu district near the Yingzhou Ecological Park.

Two Guangzhou Metro stations are located on the island. The Higher Education Mega Center North Station (simplified Chinese: 大学城北站) and Higher Education Mega Center South Station (simplified Chinese: 大学城南站) provide quick access to Guangzhou's convenient metro system.

The island is also served by a dozen of bus routes, with buses mainly running from and to the city centre of Guangzhou. Generally there are two types of bus service. Regular buses run like buses in the city, having frequent stops and therefore takes longer time to ride while express buses dedicated to serve the university city run through expressways and have less stops. Express buses mostly terminate at the old campuses of individual universities located on the island.
