Guitar Rising is an educational music video game developed by GameTank. It is similar to Rock Band and the Guitar Hero franchise, only instead of a guitar controller, a real guitar is used (by plugging a guitar-USB adapter or jack plug into a microphone port or directly to the sound card) to play. The on-screen fretboard scrolls from right to left, reading much like a tablature, with the notes lying on the corresponding string showing the number of the fret on which the note is to be played. A similar free release, LittleBigStar, is currently in beta testing.

It has been delayed due to note recognition problems (interference between notes). Release for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X was scheduled for late 2009, but the game was not released in 2009, and as of February 2010 no release date has been given.[1][2] However, a playable demo was given at Independent Game Conference West on November 5, 2009.[1]

There are expected to be at least 30 songs featured on the finished product, five of which should appear on a forthcoming demo of the game.[3] The following songs appear in a setlist shown in the game's official trailer. Enter Sandman was shown in a demo video.[1]
