According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.6 km²), of which, 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (4.59%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 898 people, 362 households, and 229 families residing in the city. The population density was 430.5 people per square mile (165.9/km²). There were 421 housing units at an average density of 201.8/sq mi (77.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 65.48% White, 29.96% African American, 0.89% Asian, 3.01% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.01% of the population.
There were 362 households out of which 30.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.1% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% were non-families. 30.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
