Hair is a filament, mostly protein, that grows from follicles found in the dermis. .The human body, apart from the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, is covered in follicles which produce thick terminal and fine vellus hair.^ Dense growth of hairs covering the body or parts of it (as on the human head); helps prevent heat loss; "he combed his hair".

The main component of hair fiber is keratin.
Cross section of a hair
Hair often refers to two distinct structures (1) the part beneath the skin, called the hair follicle or when pulled from the head called the bulb. .This organ is located in the dermis and maintains stem cells which not only re-grow the hair after it falls out but also are recruited to regrow skin after a wound[2]; and (2) the shaft, which is considered the part of the hair above the skin surface though it appears first in the epidermis.^ To dream that a lock of your hair turns gray and falls out, is a sign of trouble and disappointment in your affairs.

Evolution

A 2008 study by scientists from the Medical University of Vienna traced the origins of hair to the common ancestor of mammals, birds and lizards that lived 310 million years ago. The study found chickens, lizards and humans all possessed a similar set of genes that was involved in the production of alpha keratin. In chickens and lizards, the α-keratin produced was found in their claws, but in mammals it was used to produce hair. .The scientists involved continued searching for the mechanisms that allowed mammals to use the keratins of animal claws to produce hair.^ The hygrometer is built on principles discovered by Horace Benedict Saussure in 1783 and uses the changes in length of human hair and animal hair with humidity to derive relative humidity.

.However, abundant genetic and archaeological evidence indicates that the hairlessness of those current-day modern humans whose immediate ancestors came to occupy Northern latitudes is attributable to the relatively recent origin of these people in equatorial, sub-Saharan Africa approximately 200,000 years ago, followed by an even more recent departure from Africa that was initiated approximately 60,000 years ago.^ (WSJ, 1/23/96, p.A-15)(HN, 6/19/98) 1967-1973 The entire population of the Chagos archipelago, which lies 2,200 miles east of Africa and around 1,000 miles southwest of India, was relocated by this year.

Hence it is highly likely that the ancestors of Northern Europeans (et al. .Northern groups) failed to develop fur due to a) their relatively recent entry into the area, and b) the fact that the high levels of intelligence that had evolved in the human lineage while in Africa enabled them to survive in the cold European climate by way of the practice of wearing animal furs.^ Those who practiced acts of magic deceived themselves into believing that it was their power or knowledge that was responsible, when in fact they were being ensnared by Satan.

This provided them with time to adjust to the intense UV and sunlight by way of other means (such as panting). Hominids, on the other hand, originally possessed fur, but, due to a relatively sudden change in behavior 2.5 million years ago (due to hominid inventiveness/technological innovation) that involved intense hunting  during the day, they developed sweat glands that enabled them to perspire. This change necessitated the loss of most body hair in order to facilitate sweat evaporation (i.e. cool the body).

[7]
Humans, are part of a trend toward sparser hair in larger animals. The density of human hair follicles on the skin is actually about the average for an animal of equivalent size[8]. .It is still not clear why so much of human hair is short, underpigmented vellus hair, rather than terminal hair and the effect of testosterone on the hair follicles in both human and other mammallian species.^ It was a close enough resemblance that orthodox Christian writers considered it a Christian heresy, rather than a separate religion, and many people passed from one of these religions to the other without much revision of their beliefs.

Jablonski (2006) agrees that it was evolutionarily advantageous for pre-humans (Homo erectus) to retain the hair on their heads in order to protect the scalp as they walked upright in the intense African (equatorial) UV light (Jablonski, 2006). .While some might argue that, by this logic, humans should also express hairy shoulders given that these body parts would putatively be exposed to similar conditions, the protection of the head, the seat of the brain that enabled humanity to become one of the most successful species on the planet (and which is also very vulnerable at birth), was arguably a more urgent issue (axillary hair in the underarms and groin were also retained as signs of sexual maturity).^ The planets were the most important of these celestial signs.

During the gradual process by which Homo erectus transitioned from furry to naked skin, their hair texture putatively changed gradually from straight (the condition of most mammals, including humanity's closest cousins—chimpanzees), to Afro-like or 'kinky' (i.e. tightly coiled). In this sense, during the period in which humans were gradually losing their straight body hair and thereby exposing initially the pale skin underneath their fur to the sun, straight hair would have been an adaptive liability. .Hence, tightly coiled or 'kinky' Afro-hair may have evolved to prevent the entry of UV light into the body during the transition towards dark, UV-protected skin.^ Dense growth of hairs covering the body or parts of it (as on the human head); helps prevent heat loss; "he combed his hair".

^ Other symptoms that may occur during this stage are mild fever, fatigue, headache, sore throat, patchy hair loss, and swollen lymph glands.

^ During the growth portion of the cycle, body hair follicles are long and bulbous, and the hair advances outward at about a third of a millimeter per day.

Alternatively, some intuit that tightly coiled hair that grows into a typical Afro-like formation would have greatly reduced the ability of the head and brain to cool. .They reason that although hair density in African peoples is much less than their European counterparts, in the intense sun the effective 'woolly hat' produced would have been a disadvantage.^ They tend to get less press than Edhels or Minimum Vital , which is sad, as I think Tiemko are the most original and exciting of the new Musea bands.

^ The hair of people of African descent is typically thicker than the hair of other groups.

^ Pubic hair and axillary (armpit) hair is much darker than the hair of the scalp, and is accurately comparable to the colour of the eyebrows, if not darker (in both sexes, with the exclusion of albino people).

However, anthropologists such as Nina Jablonski make the opposite argument with regards to this hair texture. .Specifically, Jablonski's (2006) assertions suggest that the adjective "woolly" in reference to Afro-hair is a misnomer to the extent that it connotes the high heat insulation derivable from the true wool of sheep.^ Revlon RV059C Perfect Heat Professional Hair Straightener ( reference ) .

^ The 2000 Import and Export Market for Wool and Other Animal Hair Excluding Wool Tops in Argentina ( reference ) .

^ The 2000 Import and Export Market for Wool and Other Animal Hair Excluding Wool Tops in Europe ( reference ) .

Instead, the relatively sparse density of Afro-hair, combined with its springy coils actually results in an airy, almost sponge-like effect. This, in turn, Jablonski (2006) argues, actually facilitates an increase in the circulation of cool air onto the scalp. Further, Afro-hair does not respond as easily to moisture and/or sweat as straight hair. Thus it does not stick to the neck and/or scalp when wet. Rather, unless totally drenched, it tends to retain its basic springy puffiness. In this sense, the trait may enhance comfort levels in intense equatorial climates compared to straight hair (which, alternatively, tends to naturally fall over the ears and neck to a degree that provides slightly enhanced comfort levels in cold climates relative to tightly coiled hair).
.Further, some interpret the ideas of Charles Darwin as suggesting that some traits, such as hair texture, were too trivial for natural selection to have played a role.^ Anthropologists speculate that the functional significance of long head hair is almost certainly adornment, a by-product of natural selection.

^ Explores the idea that psychedelics have played a role in nearly all religious traditions.

[9] However, the concept of "triviality" is a human value judgment. It has nothing to do with whether physical traits are/were actually adaptive. In fact, while the sexual selection hypothesis cannot be totally ruled out, the asymmetrical distribution of this trait does not indicate that this was the primary causal factor. .Specifically, if hair texture were simply the result of arbitrary human aesthetic preferences, one would expect that the global distribution of the various hair textures would be fairly random.^ Yet if repeated today, the experiment would result in one very large drug bust.

Instead, the distribution of Afro-hair is strongly skewed towards the equator. .Further, it is notable that the most pervasive expression of this hair texture can be found in sub-Saharan Africa; a region of the world that abundant genetic and paleo-anthropological evidence suggests was the relatively recent (~200,000 year old) point of origin for modern humanity.^ (WSJ, 1/23/96, p.A-15)(HN, 6/19/98) 1967-1973 The entire population of the Chagos archipelago, which lies 2,200 miles east of Africa and around 1,000 miles southwest of India, was relocated by this year.

.In fact, although genetic findings (Tishkoff, 2009) suggest that sub-Saharan Africans are the most genetically diverse continental group on earth, Afro-textured hair (along with a small cluster of other physical features) approaches ubiquity is this region.^ Besides those of colour, figure, and hair , there are other physical distinctions proving a difference of race.

This points to a strong, long-term selective pressure that, in stark contrast to most other regions of the genomes of sub-Saharan groups, left little room for genetic variation at the determining loci. Such a pattern is, again, not indicative of the relatively variable trends associated with human sexual aesthetics.

Malformed bones in the pelvic area were especially deadly for women because they interfered with the successful delivery of babies; leading to the death of both the mother and the infant during labor. .Hence, those with lighter skin survived and had children at higher rates because their skin allowed more UV light for the production of vitamin D (Jablonski, 2006).^ Their wills were more capricious than those of the fixed stars and constellations, because the planets' paths through the skies were irregular.
  • The Christianity Gap in Entheogen Religion Scholarship 23 September 2009 9:27 UTC www.egodeath.com [Source type: Original source]

In this sense, the evidence with regard to the evolution of straight hair texture seems to support Jablonski's (2006) suggestions that the need for vitamin D triggered the transition from dark to light skin. Specifically, the distribution of this trait suggests that this need may have grown so intense at certain points that Northerners with mutations for straighter hair survived and had children at higher rates. This argument is made based on the principle that straight fibers better facilitate the passage of UV light into the body relative to curly hair. .It is substantiated by Iyengar's (1998) findings that UV light can pass through straight human hair roots in a manner similar to the way that light passes through fiber optic tubes (Iyengar, 1998).^ On the way to Babylon he passed through the lands of the Arabs in upper Mesopotamia and learned from them the language of animals and birds.
  • The Christianity Gap in Entheogen Religion Scholarship 23 September 2009 9:27 UTC www.egodeath.com [Source type: Original source]

Nonetheless, some argue against this stance because straighter hair ends tend to point downward while fiber optics requires that light be transmitted at a high angle to the normal of the inner reflective surface. .In light of this, they suggest that only light reflected from the ground could successfully enter the hair follicle and be transmitted down the shaft.^ They could explain the real meaning of God's revealed truth, using the terminology and methods of rational philosophy, and could correct the errors in rational philosophy by the light of revealed religion.

Even this process, they argue, is hindered by the curvature at the base of the hair. Therefore, coupled with the amount of skin covered by long head hair, these factors seem to mitigate against the adaptive usefulness of straight hair at Northern latitudes. They further argue that .UV light is also poorly reflected from soil and dull surfaces.^ They further argue that UV light is also poorly reflected from soil and dull surfaces.
  • Boston University School of Theology 15 September 2009 2:56 UTC sthweb.bu.edu [Source type: FILTERED WITH BAYES]

These ideas can be countered by the fact that during the winter, the time of year in which UV light is most scarce at Northern latitudes, the ground is often covered with white snow. Given that white is the most effective color in terms of facilitating the reflection of ground light, the hypothesis that straight hair could have been adaptively favorable cannot be fully discounted in this regard. In addition, as mentioned in the previous section, straight hair may have also contributed to enhanced comfort levels in the North. This is evident in the extent to which, relative to curly hair, it tends to provide a layer of protection for ears and necks against the cold.

The EDAR Locus

.A group of studies have recently shown that genetic patterns at the EDAR locus, a region of the modern human genome that contributes to hair texture variation among most individuals of East Asian descent, support the hypothesis that (East Asian) straight hair likely developed in this branch of the modern human lineage subsequent to the original expression of tightly coiled natural afro-hair (Mou, 2008; Fujimoto, 2008; Fujimoto, 2008b).^ This album feels less like "playing the same thing over and over" and more like "developing themes in multiple variations".

Hair is a 1979 film based on the 1968 Broadway musical of the same name about a Vietnam war draftee who meets and befriends a tribe of long-haired hippies on his way to the army induction center. The hippies introduce him to their countercultural lifestyle of marijuana, LSD, "be-ins", and protests.

.HAIR (a word common to Teutonic languages), the general term for the characteristic outgrowth of the epidermis forming the coat of mammals.^ Hair is also a musical: see Hair (musical) Hair is an outgrowth of the epidermis in mammals.

^ Non-English Usage: " Hair " is also a word in the following language with English translations in parentheses.

^ Any of the cylindrical filaments characteristically growing from the epidermis of a mammal; "there is a hair in my soup".

The word is also applied by analogy to the filamentous outgrowths from the body of insects, &c., plants, and metaphorically to anything of like appearance.

Anthropology

.The human hair has an important place among the physical criteria of race.^ Variation in the physical appearance of humans is believed by anthropologists to be an important factor in the development of personality and social relations.

^ Besides those of colour, figure, and hair , there are other physical distinctions proving a difference of race.

While its general structure and quantity vary comparatively little, its length in individuals and relatively in the two sexes, its form, its colour, its general consistency and the appearance under the microscope of its transverse section show persistent differences in the various races. It is the persistence of these differences and specially in regard to its colour and texture, which has given to hair its ethnological importance. So obvious a racial differentiation had naturally long ago attracted the attention of anthropologists. .But it was not until the i gth century that microscopic examination showed the profound difference in structure between the hair characteristic of the great divisions of mankind.^ In the third and fourth centuries other Christians took up the subjects of astrology and magic, trying to clarify the differences between Christian and pagan beliefs.

It was in 1863 that Dr Pruner-Bey read a paper before the Paris Anthropological Society entitled "On the Human Hair as a Race Character, examined by aid of the Microscope." This address established the importance of hair as a racial criterion. .He demonstrated that the structure of the hair is threefold: (1) Short and crisp, generally termed "woolly," elliptical or kidney-shaped in section, with no distinguishable medulla or pith.^ Structurally, hair consists of an inner cortex, comprising spindle-shaped cells, and an outer sheath, called the cuticle.

2. Straight, lank, long and coarse, round or nearly so in section, with the medulla or pith easily distinguishable, and almost without exception black. This is the hair of the yellow races, the Chinese, Mongols and Indians of the Americas.
3. Wavy and curly, or smooth and silky, oval in section, with medullary tube but no pith. .This is the hair of Europeans, and is mainly fair, though black, brown, red or towy varieties are found.^ In people of European descent, blond hair and black hair are at the thinner end of the scale, while red hair is the thickest.

There is a fourth type of hair describable as "frizzy." It is easily distinguishable from the Asiatic and European types, but not from the negroid wool. It is always thick and black, and is characteristic of the Australians, Nubians, and certain of the Mulattos. Generally hair curls in proportion to its flatness. The rounder it is the stiffer and lanker. These extremes are respectively represented by the Papuans and the Japanese. Of all hair the woolly type is found to be the most persistent, as in the case of the Brazilian Cafusos, negro and native hybrids. Quatrefages quotes the case of a triple hybrid, "half negro, quarter Cherokee, quarter English," who had short crisp furrylooking hair.
.Wavy types of hair vary most in colour: almost the deepest hue of black being found side by side with the most flaxen and towy.^ My hair can go from being almost straight (but the frizz is always there) to very wavy to getting amazing waves and spirals with the RR. p. 82) as "of a dark, rusty brown hue." Fair hair in all its shades is frequent among the populations of northern Europe, but much rarer in the south. According to Dr John Beddoe there are sixteen blonds out of every hundred Scotch, thirteen out of every hundred English, and two only out of a hundred Italians. The percentage of brown hair is 75% among Spaniards, 39 among French and 16 only in Scandinavia. Among the straight-haired races fair hair is far rarer; it is, however, found among the western Finns. .Among those races with frizzy hair, red is almost as common as among those with wavy hair.^ Besides those of colour, figure, and hair , there are other physical distinctions proving a difference of race.

A certain correlation appears to exist between the nature of hair and its absolute or relative length in the two sexes. Thus straight hair is the longest (Chinese, Red Indians), while woolly is shortest. Wavy hair holds an intermediate position. In the two extremes the difference of length in man and woman is scarcely noticeable. .In some lank-haired races, men's tresses are as long as women's, e.g. the Chinese pigtail, and the hair of Redskins which grows to the length sometimes of upwards of g ft.^ In the time of the apostle, among the Greeks the men wore short hair , while that of the women was long (1 Cor.

and in some cases has been known to reach 6 ft. or more.
The growth of hair on the body corresponds in general with that on the head. The hairiest races are the Australians and Tasmanians, whose heads are veritable mops in the thickness and unkempt luxuriance of the locks. Next to them are the Todas, and other hill-tribesmen of India, and the Hairy Ainu of Japan. .Traces, too, of the markedly hairy race, now extinct, supposed to be the ancestor of Toda and Ainu alike, are to be found here and there in Europe, especially among the Russian peasantry.^ Right now, it is more like a curl here and there.

The least hairy peoples are the yellow races, the men often scarcely having rudimentary beards, e.g. Indians of America and the Mongols. Negroid peoples may be said to be intermediate, but usually incline to hairlessness. The wavyhaired populations hold also an intermediate position, but somewhat incline to hairiness. Among negroes especially no rule can be formulated. Bare types such as the Bushmen and western negroes are found contiguous to hairy types such as the inhabitants of Ashantee. Neither is there any rule as to baldness. .From statistics taken in America it would seem that it is ten times less frequent among negroes than among whites between the ages of thirty-three and forty-five years, and thirty times less between twenty-one and thirty-two years.^ For a woman to compare a white hair with a black one, which she takes from her head, foretells that she will be likely to hesitate between two offers of seeming fortune, and unless she uses great care, will choose the one that will afford her loss or distress instead of pleasant fortune.

The finest qualities, and the greatest quantities as well, are obtained from Russia, where a variety of pig is reared principally on account of its bristles. .The best and most costly bristles are used by shoemakers, secondary qualities being employed for toilet and clothes-brushes, while inferior qualities are worked up into the commoner kinds of brushes used by painters and for many mechanical purposes.^ Human beings can discover and predict the workings of fate, but cannot have foreknowledge concerning salvation because of the inferiority of human intelligence to God's intelligence .

the south of France the cultivation and sale of heads of hair by peasant girls is a common practice; and hawkers attend fairs for the special purpose of engaging in this traffic. Hair 5 and even 6 ft. long is sometimes obtained. Scarcely any of the "raw material" is obtained in the United Kingdom except in the form of ladies' "combings." Bleaching of hair by means of peroxide of hydrogen is extensively practised, with the view of obtaining a supply of golden locks, or of preparing white hair for mixing to match grey shades; but in neither case is the result very successful. .Human hair is worked up into a great variety of wigs, scalps, artificial fronts, frizzets and curls, all for supplementing the scanty or failing resources of nature.^ Parade is the third release from the French band, whose works consist of all-instrumental pieces generated by a keyboards/guitars/drums line-up.

Simple English

Hair is something that grows from the skin of mammals. The hair of non-human animals is usually called fur. Sheep and goats have curly hair, which is usually called wool. Hair is made of keratin. Keratins are proteins, long chains of amino acids.

Humans and some other animals have lost much of their hair through evolution, and some other mammals, such as the elephant and the whale, have almost none at all.

False hair

Other animals, for example certain insects and spiders also have hairs; these are however not true hair in the biological sense, but rather bristles. The hairs found on certain plants are also not true hair, but Trichomes.

Functions of hair

Hair can have different functions:

  • It can protect against light. It can absorb certain parts of UV radiation and of heat.
  • It can protect against getting cold too quickly; it can conserve warmth.
  • It can protect against rain; many animals with fur specially treat it for this purpose.
  • It can absorb excess moisture, which may come from sweating. The glands that produce the sweat are in the skin.
  • It can protect against being seen and help hiding. The hair of certain animals has a coloring that changes with the seasons.
  • Animals can change their hair so they look bigger, or more threatening. This can also be used for mating; which is the case with lions, for example.

Human hair

In humans, hair grows mostly on the head, and the amount of body hair is different from race to race. Asians and native North Americans have the least amount of body hair, while Caucasians tend to have the most.

Hair color

Hair color is passed down by parents only. Natural hair color can be given only by genes. It is impossible to have a hair color that is not passed down genetically by both mother and father. This relies on dominant and recessive genes carried by a parent. These genes may not be the color of their hair, however, many people carry genes that are recessive and do not show in their traits or features.

Dyeing hair is to change the color of hair. It consists of a chemical mixture which can change the color of hair by a chemical reaction. Many people dye their hair to hide gray or white hairs. This is because most people gain white or gray hairs as they grow older.

Genetics and biochemistry

Two types of melanin pigment give hair its color: eumelanin and pheomelanin. Pheomelanin colors hair red. Eumelanin determines the darkness of the hair color. A low concentration of brown eumelanin results in blond hair, whereas a higher concentration of brown eumelanin will color the hair brown. High amounts of black eumelanin result in black hair, while low concentrations give gray hair. All humans have some pheomelanin in their hair.

The genetics of hair colors are not yet firmly established. According to one theory, at least two gene pairs control human hair color.

One phenotype (brown/blond) has a dominant brown allele and a recessive blond allele. A person with a brown allele will have brown hair; a person with no brown alleles will be blond. This explains why two brown-haired parents can produce a blond-haired child.

The other gene pair is a non-red/red pair, where the not-red allele is dominant and the allele for red hair is recessive. A person with two copies of the red-haired allele will have red hair, but it will be either auburn or bright reddish orange depending on whether the first gene pair gives brown or blond hair, respectively.

The two-gene model does not account for all possible shades of brown, blond, or red (for example, platinum blond versus dark blonde/light brown), nor does it explain why hair color sometimes darkens as a person ages. Several other gene pairs control the light versus dark hair color in a cumulative effect (quantitative genetics).

Hair texture

Hair texture is also inherited genetically. The thickness of hair, its color and its tendency to curl are all inherited. There are also genetic differences between men and women. Almost all baldness is male, for example. Body hair is limited in women, and thicker in men.

Hair loss

People have about 100,000 strands of hair on their head. About 100 fall out each day, but they usually grow back.

Men often lose some of their hair as they grow older. This is known as baldness, and doctors call it "male pattern baldness". Its name comes from the fact that hair loss almost always follows the same pattern. It begins by hair falling out first from the front and sides of the head, and thinning from the top of the head, usually until it is all gone. After a while, all that may be left is a fringe of hair running above the ears and around the lower back of the head. Even though it is unusual for women to go bald, many women suffer from thinning hair over the top of their head as they grow old.

People have tried to find cures for hair loss for thousands of years. In an effort to get their hair back, men have tried "cures" like applying strange lotions or even having their heads packed in chicken manure.[needs proof] Many unproven "cures" are still marketed today. It is only in the last decade or so that treatments have been developed which do sometimes work. Some doctors do hair transplants, where they take tiny plugs of hair from areas like the back of the neck and plant them in the bald spots on the head. Some drugs have been tested and approved for sale as hair loss treatments. They encourage hair regrowth and thickening, but work better if applied before hair loss turns to baldness.

History and culture

People have been interested in head hair for hundreds of thousands of years. For both men and women, styling and coloring of hair have been a way to look good, and get prestige. Sometimes society makes rules about hair, for example by not allowing people to cut their hair or beards.
