Hamilton County is a county located on the Edwards Plateau in Central Texas. In 2000, its population was 8,229. Hamilton County is named for James Hamilton Jr., a former governor of South Carolina who gave financial aid to the Republic of Texas. The county seat is Hamilton[1].

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 836 square miles (2,166 km2), of which, 835 square miles (2,164 km2) is land and 1 square mile (2 km2) (0.08%) is water.
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 8,229 people, 3,374 households, and 2,324 families residing in the county. The population density was 10 people per square mile (4 per km²). There were 4,455 housing units at an average density of 5 per square mile (2 per km²). The racial makeup of the county was 93.81% White, 0.15% (12) Black or African American, 0.44% (36) Native American, 0.15% (12) Asian, 0.05% (4) Pacific Islander, 4.36% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. 7.41% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 3,374 households out of which 27.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.20% were married couples living together, 7.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.10% were non-families. 28.40% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.89.
In the county, the population was spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 6.00% from 18 to 24, 22.90% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 23.60% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 93.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.10 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $31,150, and the median income for a family was $39,494. Males had a median income of $26,703 versus $20,192 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,800. About 10.60% of families and 14.20% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.20% of those under age 18 and 13.80% of those age 65 or over.
Hamilton County is part of the Waco/Temple/Killeen (Central Texas) Television media market. Local News media outlets are: KCEN-TV, KWTX-TV, KXXV-TV, KWBU-TV, KWKT-TV, and KNCT-TV. Although they are provided satellite television services, residents of Hamilton County are only allowed to view the Dallas/Fort Worth market stations, forcing some area residents to use television antennas to get local news and information. In the cities of Hamilton and Hico, Northland Cable Television continues to offer KCEN-TV, KWTX-TV, and KXXV-TV.
