A handheld console, like a regular console, is differentiated from other handheld video games in its ability to play multiple games, usually through inserting cartridges or other media. These can be portable versions of normal consoles (Like the Sega Nomad or the Turbo Express) or stand-alone systems with their own unique media and library of games (such as the Nintendo Game Boy or Sega Game Gear). These consoles are designed to be entirely self-contained (with input and display all contained in one unit) and are designed with portability in mind, allowing the gamer to play away from home. The most recent handhelds to be released are Nintendo's Nintendo DS and Game Boy Micro (a redesigned Game Boy Advance) and Sony's first handheld, the PlayStation Portable.

A handheld is an object that can be picked up using a hand. Typical examples are a mobile phone, Game Boy, remote control, floppy disk and a keyboard. A handheld refers to anything that can be carry by hand. It is usually refers to small item that is also portable. For a small item that is not portable, the word handheld cannot be used. Non-electrical objects can be counted as a "handheld", but the term usually means electronic things. Handheld also refers to "can be held by hand", so any electronic item that you can hold in your hand is handheld. This often means the latest technology for all electronic mobile items, such as mobile phone, notebook, digital dictionary and many other small electronic devices.
